I've been looking into either buying five, 45 gallon smart pots or making my own using 36" X 50' roll of weilded metal fencing and fastening on Dewitts Pro 5 weed barrier to the inside of the wire ring. I'd be leaving them bottomless and setting it into a pre dug 6-12" holes for better stability and to allow the roots to spread into the ground which I will also amend.
Question is..Is it worth getting the extra size by making my own? The materials I'm buying will cost out about the same as buying the smart pots. But I think I can make five 100 gallons pots for the price of buying five 45 gallon smart pots.
I know this question will come, so I'll explain it now. I'm going above ground because I've had to move my legal grow into a secure fenced area that I can lock (outdoors) The area is a combined dog run/extra chicken run. It gets full day sun from sunrise to sunset as well. About 18 inches of the weilded fencing will be "extra" without the weed barrier and work both as protection from the chickens getting in and scratching at the base of the plant and something I can secure bamboo supports to.
What do you think? At this point my main cost concern in the size difference is the cost of the bales of Pro-Mix HP.
