Bugs Down under

Hi all,

First post so be gentle please kiss-assI was wondering if in Australia there are any bugs I need to watch out for or prepare for in flower? I have had a few dramas with spider mites and now need help identifying another couple of things I have noticed when doing a flush. The first is a tiny brown but a little see through Caterpillar in the soil that came to the surface soon after the flush. Then a fruit fly looking flying insect that seems to just hang around the soil and when I water flies around the area until the water settles. They are black in color with a clear wing. As I dont have a macro lense I'm not really able to take photos sorry ...

I would really appreciate some help. Thanks in advance all!!!

I don't know anything of Australian growing conditions, other than they produce the biggest fucking plants ever. What i can say to you, though, is an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Diatomaceous earth and salt, on tape around your pot or a layer on the ground will stop slugs + spiders from getting up in there, and one more piece of tape just to catch survivors. cedar chips as mulch to prevent bud worms, cages or fences for deer and other fellers. ladybugs and praying mantis for aphids, other small guys that got past your tape and such. Dogs & firearms for thieves

Hi Ilovethegreen,

I couldn't agree more in relation the the prevention I learned the hard way with spider Mites. Aussie huge outdoor sativa is what I grew up on I remember seeing plants that looked more like trees with colas that were as big as my leg. Those were the days Thanks for your advice Mate that Diatomaceous earth stuff is crazy hard to get your hands on down our way. I only just learned of bud worm recently I am not certain if we have them? We have every other bastard pest and dangerous animal so it wouldn't surprise me! Hopefully an experienced Aussie grower will notice my post and I can get some specific info... Fingers are crossed, thanks again Mate!!!

whitefly and thrips can be a pain. they love to suck the sap/sugars from your plants. give your plant a gentle shake and you'll know if you have them or not. I hit the plants early with a oil based (neem, pyrethrum etc.) spray. Try and get the under leaves as best ya can. harder said then done though.

Other then that i only look out for the budworm when the girls start headin. (browning rotten patches)

This season though it hasnt been the bugs causing trouble its been the heat (115F + temps down south) The weather mob had to extend temp readers out to 130F because quite a few towns around the country have been hitting 50C / 122F + days on end...

Hey anuryzm,

Its an absolute scorcher today! Im genuinely concerned for their health!!! I have an isolating fan going in there but I fear that's not enough. Do you know of a good product that works on bud worms thats obtainable around these parts? Bunnings maybe? I'm heading into town today to get a few supplies and am a little weary of these bud worms Mate. Do they have a scientific name?
