Buds with horns? HUH?

Ok I missed the memo here. If it was just Rodan who fell through the NFT tube (turned out the stoner dog was jumping and hanging off the branches trying to eat buds.....), I'd think she was stressing but ALL four of the girls are beginning to develop new buds on the buds. So they were getting mature and the pistils all turned orange/brown. Now suddenly on top of the browned pistils they are suddenly pumping out more white pistils.

What is this?

i believe that is called foxtailing, could be genetics or it could be caused from heat stress
Thank you! Is there a way to stop it? As for heat I have hit 80 on a couple occasions but for the most part it's 77/78 and about 50% humidity. Could that do it?

Strain dependent yes 80 + will cause premature foxtailing BUT I theroize that if you feed a strain right on the money it will put out phattys and then on top of that foxtail alittle (third flush of calax devopment to be tech) witch leafs to higher yeilds...;) maybe

Edit : after retesting your post I see the stress issue as the buds below look hella done but the new upper development leads me to belive the plants have gotten over the stress and wanna push out more.. More info needed - how far in? Color of trichs? Known strain?

you are right, it is foxtailing, and i have seen it on quite a few strains, i think too much/too close to the lights has something to do with it. all of the ones i have seen have been on the top of the top buds, and always toward end of flower cycle, almost like they want to start growing again.:weed:

They are Nirvana Aurora Indica and they are in the 8th week of flowering, to be specific now they are on their 59th day. The trichomes are mostly clear with some cloudy ones. They only reached 80 degrees a couple times. Yes they are showing some nutrient burn at the tips. I also had some nitrogen deficiency issues during flowering.

Come to think of it the foxtailing started right after I gave them a dose of Nitrogen. I wonder if it's the shot of Nitrogen that caused it?

I've seen this before on 'cheese' and i think it's a good sign of development. Doesn't look like over-stretched calyxes from heat stress.

It's ready BTW so I hope you flushed it already !!

Do you use bloombastic? could be this.
Nope, no bloombastic, just the basic General Hydroponics 3 part Flora series and some CalMag oh and a ton of pH down LOL but that doesn't really count, ha!

Thanks, that's good to know. By the way what do you mean flush? I grow NFT. What is there to flush?

You're fine bro! A lot of strains "foxtail". It's common on many strains including the famous "Medusa"

Too much heat causes the buds to run. They tend to grow out light and airy. Your buds look dense to me.

Tip burn means you're right on the edge of feeding them too much nutes. You can drop your nutes about 200PPM next time.

Don't forget to flush before harvest.

This is also caused by putting your girls into a blackout shock. At about 50 days, put in a 48-hour dark period; sometimes you can use two-24 hour dark periods spaced out a week apart, but if you are already at 59 days, it is too late for that anyway - but you are seeing part of what happens when "Photoperiod Interruptus" is employed. The buds also tend to get fatter and denser when this is done in combination with a low-temperature flush - which also tends to make your plant turn purple-ish. From going to 80 degrees a few times, I would not worry.

Just about any strain will do this....I'm guessing the bud that's doing that is right up next to your light. You've got to remember your growing a plant that is pushing out flowers throughout it's life cycle in flowering. Until the day you chop it down it's going to keep trying to put out new hairs (usually right up on the top bud) and the buds will continue to swell. Eventually (several more weeks) the plant will stop putting out any new pistil growth and the buds will just ripen and retract the pistils 100% into the buds. Usually by that time your trichomes would have turned at least 50% amber, which means you've waited TOO long to harvest. So don't worry about the little "foxtailing" you got going on up top. It's pretty common and won't matter one bit once you chop that down and let the bud cure.

I have also seen a Cheese strain do this and it made it look all the prettier..lol. And isn't 50% amber more of a preference than being "too long"? You get the best of both worlds and effects.
