Buds seeking shade

This cycle we've had a sativa-dominant strain on the perimeter of the room. I'm sure it's going to be great but I'm not real excited just because they got way too tall way fast, and it's been a big pain in the butt. Anyway the weird thing is, these plants have something like a second canopy above the canopy of the garden in the middle of the room, and what surprised me is that they didn't seek out the HPS light, but instead seem to want the shade. In fact, buds that got all the way above the light hood seem to be just as well developed as the buds in the sweet spot under the light. WTF? And around the perimeter, the buds on the outer edge seem to have done better than the buds closer to the light. So my theory is that I have some strain that wants to be "shade grown." None of it is really great colas (my indicas in the same room are simply epic though, and that's for another post.) So they are small foxtails but there are a LOT of them, and that's okay because they are all going into edibles :-)

Anybody else have a strain that thinks it prefers shade to high lumens? I don't believe they are shying away from heat -- in fact it's probably hotter on the edges.
