Bud topping?

Is there some sort of topping method out there that people are using to do something similar to this or is this common?

I just grew white widow and about halfway into flowering one bud got too close to my hps. Approx. 1cm of the very tip of the cola was burned. Not so bad that it was black but the hairs were done and the bud tip and leaves were yellow and completely dry.

I thought I screwed it up but as a result, instead of one bud tip on that cola, there ended up being 4+(all still one main big cola) and that was by far the biggest bud of my harvest.

First 2 pics are of a normal bud and the other of the one that got burned.

This happens sometimes naturally on some strains, some turn liek xmas trees with tips and some break out in to 5 or so mini colas on top of the bud. I have 2 strains and one of them is showing this.

Hmm that is interesting. Plants always have a mechanism for repairing itself and protecting itself. Like when you top it, it seems to repair and protect itself by focusing on developing at least 2 new shoots in case it happens again. I wonder if cutting off the top of a flower would make it do that at a certain stage of growth. If I had any plants at about 3 or 4 weeks into flowering, I would probably try it on a lower flowering spot to see if I could get it to develop additional new flower growth. Maybe one or two bud sites at 3 weeks and one or two at 4 weeks. I will have to wait until next crop though since I am past that stage now. Hope I remember this.

I thought it was interesting but I'm no expert. Just thought I'd share, just in case.
