Bud Rot- Outdoor Grow

My buds started getting a gray/brown rot near the stem- I pulled off some of the rotted parts of the bud the last few weeks of growing. Here are some pictures of buds after harvest- a little hard to tell but one can see the gray/brown "dead" part near the center of each bud. One plant had some spider webs but I kept pulling them off- those buds ended up with no damage when they were harvested.

Any suggestions on what happened to my buds? I had this issue (much greater) last year and want to make sure it doesn't happen in the future.

Thanks in advance for the input...

Sorry for the delay in replying:
  • Both plants were in 12 gallon containers.
  • They had been getting 6-8 hours direct sunlight until Labor Day (Sept 1), then moved to a spot with strong indirect light from a pine tree canopy and about 3 hours of direct sunlight.
  • Promix was the growing medium; I fed with Botanicare Grow before flowering, Botanicare Bloom after flowering- plants were fed about every 10 days. I don't think overwatering was an issue this year.
  • I did not notice issues related to poor feeding (leaves dropping from the bottom of the plant first) this year like I have had in the past.
  • One plant looked healthy all the way to harvest; the buds in the pictures above are from that plant.
  • The other plant started looking scraggly in August but really went downhill after mid-September.
  • Some of the buds on both plants were fairly dense; a lot of popcorn buds on the lower parts of the plants.
  • No issues with cold or dampness this season.
  • I did not notice any worms or caterpillars during the harvesting/drying/curing process.
Feel free to check out the pictures on page 2 of my Backyard Grow 2014 thread to get a better look at the plants during the late growing season.
