bud rot is here...

so i noticed some bud rot today on one of the lower buds, figures this shit starts right when we are expected to have a few days of wet weather but what are ya gonna do? on a positive note, it was only on one bud, and the reason was a small group of leaves that i missed had gone brown and receaded into the bud, and the rot was centered around that. i usually try to remove those brown, leaves for this reason, but i missed this spot so at least i know the cause. i removed the whole bud and trimmed away the rot and whats left is now drying and waiting to be sampled as i'm getting real close. quick question for you guys, when dealing with rot do you remove the whole bud as i did or do you just try and cut away the effected areas and hope for the best? i was worried about losing the whole bud so i thought fuck it, better to have a premature bud rather than hoping the rot won't spread and ruin the whole bud. thoughts?

Glad you found the source of the mold. I was thinking about it this morning and it would seem that a healthy live plant shouldn't get mold.. Other flowers that are outside just dont succomb to mold like buds. It would seem to me that there is an underlying cause of the mold (dead leaves, bug shit, or unhealthy plant) Does this seem correct? Going to check my plant in a little bit but not expecting to see any mold even tho it rained good last night and possibly for the next 4-5 days.

I too am at war with botrytis cinerea. Am fighting with frequent inspections and copper soap fungicide treatments. I find new infections almost daily, the entire bud is removed and area surrounding sprayed with heavy fungicide. I never remove just part of a bud, it's always the entire thing. I do not find the mold to spread locally from bud to bud, new infections seem to be completely unrelated to the location of previous ones.

Botrytis cinerea spores are everywhere and only need ideal conditions to germinate (humidity and temperature). 99.9% of the time the infections start at or near a plant wound or dead plant material. As far as I can tell, there isn't shit I can do about it but fight and try to minimize incidents. I read somewhere that Uncle Ben concurs, he calls bud rot nature's "tax" on your plants. Just go ahead and plan on paying up.

As far as early harvest -- why? You're not going to lose the entire plant overnight. I'd rather have 50% mature yield than 90% of my yield early harvested. Know what I mean? Keep fighting the good fight.

extremely dense colas as opposed to more airy long colas mold easier in my experience

Has anyone ever tried using a dehumidifier in their greenhouse (if you grow in a gh) to prevent mold? I was thinking about using one this year.

so i nuked a tiny piece of the bud that was drying and tried it. besides the taste, the bud has come a long way in the last few weeks. i'm at 8 weeks tomorrow on some indica dominant bagseed so i'm gonna give her about another week and then she will get the axe.

I'm in a relatively dry climate but have gotten mold. And at least in my case, it was caused by budworms,,so you might want to check and spray for them to eliminate one possible cause

The dead curled leaf is what to look for :IMAG0578.jpg

Gently give the sugar leaf a little tug, if it comes free it's likely brown at the base. Inspect the bud closer and sperad it open:

I hope this helps somebody find mould before it's too late. Sorry I couldn't take better pics of the inside of the bud, light was fading and the phone isn't great in low light.

^^^ this is exactly what caused mine, and from my research seems to be one of the biggest causes. luckily its not only easy to spot, but easy to prevent as well. simply remove the leaves, although be sure to cut as close to the stem as possible and watch the area that was cut as these areas can be a source of the same rot.

Agreed, I sterilized the areas that mould was cut out of with a BBQ lighter. It seemed to work but I was getting this occurance on other bud sites as well so she got the chop a week early.
