Bud rot (botrytis cinerea) is an incredibly wide-spread disease, affecting a wide range of crops, including cannabis. It's a type of mold, similar to powdery mildew and downy mildew.
honestly you should not be smoking mold it is extremely bad for your health bud rot starts within the plant and works its way out.
with all this being said if you want to smoke mold handle. have you smoked any yet? if you have does it make you vomit? or is it good smoke?
I know collective wisdom says "toss" but as someone that has been painstakingly cutting mold from 3 of my 4 plants for 2 days I agree with you. If you have a small outdoor grow in the NE it's a year before the process can begin again. After investing a shitload of money, time and anxiety we have to salvage what we can without lectures. I chopped my DP's and my Blue Dream early, did a semi-bath with q-tips and peroxide on roots, (no point in saturating them again). and hung them in climate controlled well ventilated area. I am not an advocate of smoking mold rot, etc, lol by any means but with hard work there are sometimes alternatives than chucking when possible.

after cutting out all the visible rot, Mix2 cups 3% peroxide 2 gals of water dip let soak 1 minute hang in front of fan until not dripping, Move on to regular dry cure nice an clean no live mold spores been washing my outs for a few yrs.
Botrytis spores are everywhere, floating in the air. You can have spores all over your flower but if conditions never got right for them to germinate you would never know without a microscope and ability to identify botrytis cinera spores. When you have large colas start getting it, the spore probably landed on the flower weeks early but it didnt germinate and infect the plant untill the flower grew around it and conditions got right. Aspergillis is the one to worry about, but I have never seen it on flowers, doesnt mean it cant happen.

I have bud rot here and there on a few of my outdoor gals and I just cut the buds away and a bit more of the nearest buds to the area. I just harvested a Banana Kush Cake because of the bud rot I was finding here and there, and lost over 100g easily. I still harvested the plant and got 1500g wet off her and did the lemon juice, baking soda, water mixture and the 2 more buckets for rinsing. Thankfully I have a freeze dryer and toss them in there to dry and cured 40hrs later and have 244g so far, more in freezer (stuffed my trays full and took longer than normal)
so if it’s just a few spots here and there, I say cut the buds out and toss in the garbage. I still think there is some plant life that is worth harvesting for consumption, but just keep your eye out for it.

Shes dried and curing. Other than the 2 early rots i cut out there has been no issues. Did a small sample smoke. Honestly bettr than some of the rec theyre selling here. Cheers!

After going through powdery mildew issues in 2020, I dabbled with washing, and now I wash- always. It seems weird at first, but it works like a charm, no impact on terps, very minimal trichome impact. When I am done with a wash round there’s only a little trichome residue. But getting a few bugs out and any mildew/mold spores- worth it. I used to have an elaborate three bin system, but now just use a single bucket, tap water with a cup of hydrogen peroxide added, submerge one 12-18” stem at a time, swish gently under water for about twenty seconds, then rinse off thoroughly in the sink under a shower, trim away large leaves, rinse off a bit more. If any rot spotted, cut that out and repeat the dunk and wash and rinse. Then sit the stem(s) in a strainer or dishrack to shed off excess water, before hanging on a clothesline with a binder clip. It’s important to wash immediately at harvest- within half hour. After the wash, the key is to have a fan blowing vigorously so the washed stems on the line dry off quickly- within a few minutes there should be no dripping, and within an hour or two there is no indication of washing having occurred. After the first half day reduce the airflow to gentle. I have had such great terp retention across strains in the wash-dry-cure that I now think that something about dunking the fresh cut stem keeps the flower a little bit more alive during the dry process. I like to dry to very dry to the touch, then bring back the humidity in the jar/burp. I live in a not dry area, so air is naturally at the right humidity. Overall, washing makes sense for my setup and conditions, may not be a good idea in other settings, but I encourage folks to dabble with a stem or two.
