bubs are fully dry but taste awful when smoked (first grow)

ok so i dried them a while maybe a week or 2 hanging upside down in my dark closet, then i put them in some paper bags for another week or so, finally i moved them to tuperware and plastic zip lock bags. now this was my first grow and i went about it total noob style, didnt flush with water or stop nutes because i wanted to let it grow as much as possible, only later to find out that the thc content degrades at a certain point, and then hurriedly harvesting the entire crop. anyways is there any way to save it for smoking or do i just have to make weed butter outta the entire yield. btw the thc content is still pretty good, if i can stomach the stuff to smoke its highly effective. the stems can easily snap and break so i figured curing was over and nothing more could be one, plz tell me im wrong, also any pointers i would appreciate.

Well if you didn't flush and harvested I'm sure that's your shitty taste. Your fucked. You might be able to water cure and get rid of the smell and taste but even then it might not help. Id make hash or butter with it and call it a day.

hey Reb

first off, 2 weeks might have been a litle to much, depending on the bud density. Im in a location that is already with 32Cº and very low relative humidity so after 3 days my smaller buds are almost dry, i put them in jars and i pay close attention to the bigger buds in the 4 and 5th day, then i put them also in jars, NOT on paper bags because i found out they over-dried my bud leaving them with a hay smell\taste. After 24 hours in the jar i inspect the buds, most times the smaller ones only need to be opened some minutes a day for a week, same goes for the bigger ones once in the jar its mostly a feel, if your bud is over-dried the cure process stops and you get no benefit from the jar so i rather have to vent some humidity, instead of getting to a point there is no chance to cure the bud.
In any case, your best bet would be to put the bud in the jars for at least 10 days and test drive it again, if it has enough humidity for the cure process to take place, in 10 days \ 2 weeks it should smoke better.

and of course the flushing part goes without saying... that would have helped a lot with any taste\smoke issues...

yeh flushing does help a lot, and i wouldnt cure them in tuperware or zip lock bags, glass mason jars work the best and you can find them at the grocery store usually, thats what brings out the flavor and smell, just keep them in a cool dark place and open them twice a day for 10 mins to let the moisture out, cure can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 month in some cases to make the THC the much more psycoactive. the longer you cure them the better them will be

Sorry that's false, THC potency/psychoactivity has nothing to do with curing and everything to do with everything leading up to curing. Curing affects two things only - longevity and smokability.

*EDIT* I foolishly paired psychoactivity with potency. I was quite medicated when I posted this.

I must disagree with you. Cannabinoids in fresh plant material are mostly in acid form, not psychoactive. The acid cannabinoids decarboxylate (they lose the gas, carbon dioxide) during the curing processes, which converts them to their psychoactive neutral forms....

well i guess this just confirms what i already knew but didnt want to believe and only learned after it was too late. bud density was pretty low as i used an old hps 400 watt and ghetto miracle grow nutes (now i got fox farm and a nice shiny bulb).

how do you tell the appropriate level of dryness to move from closet to mason jar then?

and how big of mason jars, and how full should they be, i tried to space mine out as much as possible

well shit if you used miracle grow thats your problem right there, that shit will kill your plants dude, thats the worst nute you could give them, fox farm ive heard works well, ive never got a chance to use it though

and the size of the mason jar really depends on how much you yield, and fill up the jars about half way or so, just make sure there not packed in to tite so there is enough air space inside, you may even want to keep an extra empty jar so that you can pour the full jar of nugs into that one so the nugs get turned around a bit so everything cures evenly

stop listening to everyone talking shit, here is an actual HELPFUL tip

throw those buds in a bucket of water for a week then dry em

Don't listen to the flush people. I've posted numerous times around these forums refuting them.

After 2 weeks I bet your buds were ready for a jar, especially if they weren't the densest. Did you go by time, or the "snap the branch" test for dryness?

Tupperware and plastic bags work well enough.

Do listen to the guy that mentioned water cure. I had some fucking smelly afghan once, and it smoked great but stunk up the whole house. Water cured it for 5 days, and smell decreased 100x. I shoulda cloned that stink-tastic afghan.

You could also try putting something to add moisture / aroma back into the buds. Some people use a little orange peel. Try it out on a few little buds, and remember to burp the tupperware (or whatever) as the moisture from the orange peel (fruit slice) could invite mold.

oh, and one more thing about the stem snapping. That doesn't tell you when curing is over, it's used as a way to measure how dry the buds are. Curing isn't just drying. Cutting/trimming => drying => curing.

I've grown beautiful plants with miracle grow.. But it sounds like something went wrong, flushing I would guess. I would definitely recommend water curing some of the harvest to see how it works out.
