Brown Spots on Leaves

Hello Everyone. I'm a noob at growing, in fact this is my first grow. I have to say this site has been more than helpful. I planted 40 plants in peat pots under t12 flourescents. It is now day 18. 3 days ago I transferred the plants into pots using miracle grow potting soil, which after doing some reading, I'm convinced that definitely wasn't the best choice. About 4 of the plants have brown spots on the outside of the lower leaves. I'm not sure if this a PH issue or not. I mixed 1 ounce of dolomite lime to every gallon of soil used, but It's only been 3 days. Can someone please take a look at the pics and give me your thoughts. Thanks to everyone in advance.

The bottom leafs usually crap out..it only appears to be there..watch for progression..there is a good pic chart in FAQ..go to plant prob. then to nute?pH prob..then the plant abuse chart by Nietzsche...also there is another place..FAQ to water, nutes & additives..go to how do I find.. chart... LUCK..they look pretty healthy to me...just watch and don't over nute..you might even pull back a bit to see they don't progress..don't start trying all the "remedies" till your sure.

just in case I didn't include enough info I've only fertilized the plants once at day 9. The NPK was (18-21-18). Should I feed the plants again even though I just put them in potting soil 3 days ago? I don't know the PH of my soil or water, but I guess I'll buy a kit this evening. I saw some other pictures that had similar spots that were a magnesium deficiency. I would have thought the dolomite lime would have taken care of that, but maybe since it's only been 3 days it hasn't had time to correct itself.

i dont think it`s ph. if you used that nute with 18/21/10 thats a flower nute not veg and that was to young to nute so i would think that the nutes would still be in the plant and then by transplanting in new soil that gave a freah supply of nutes ( in soil) and thats probably to much. nute burn, just use water if it spreads flush and no nutes in new soil for a couple weeks there is enough in ther to keep it going. if that mg soil has slow release nutes you have to be carefull adding more.

Thanks to both of you guys. Just so you know bonz that was 18-21-18. I guess the 18 + ) made a smiley face. The only reason I gave nutes at day 9 was that I read that the peat pots didn't carry any nutes and the seed only carried enough for about the first week. I've got some 15-30-15 for flowering. Do you think that will work? Also, the pots I have the plants in are fairly small { 1 1/2 qts. }. I was trying to grow many smaller plants vs. a couple of large ones, and eventually start the SOG method. How long do you suggest waiting between fertilizations? Thanks again.

I tried growing MG and it did the same thing. I thnk it's nute burn. I would replant in diff. mix use potting mix not soil. I have seen lots people using promix BX with mychoryze it suppose to help roots uptake nutes, sounds good aanyway

i checked the ph and its good
nothing to worry about?

well 18/21/18 is still not good for veg. thats closer to flower nute but you still need more potasium than that. the same goes for the 15/30/15 it needs more of the k ( potasium) what brand are you using? are you at about 3 or 4 weeks now? if so i would consider doing a transplant into better soil as happygrits said. the problem with mg is that most of it has slow release nutes so when you add more nutes they burn and lock up. it is probably the most common mistake for new people. if your going to use nutes you need at least a ph tester. dont remember if i said it earlier but i got a cheapo tester ( liquid one) for like 8 bucks. the nutes usualy lower the ph. for now i would just use water till you get one.

Mg soil is good soil, only when you don't add more nutes. I like the miracle grow organic potting soil combined with there perlite which has a little nutes amended into it.:blsmoke:

that exactly why i dont recomend it to new guys. because thier watering schedule of wet/dry is usaly wrong and they get into trouble, espesialy when they are slow release nutes. personaly i haven`t used mg of anything but i tend to go with what has been tested and proven to be better.

well MG has been tested and many growers use it, even fdd uses it and look at his garden. If you have read gardem knowms book he recommends it and he grew 8oz with cfl's and mg soil:blsmoke:

Thanks to everyone for your responses. Bonz, was using MG tomato nutes, which are 18-21-18 for veg, but I only used them once. I have the mg bloom booster, which is 15-30-15 for flowering. I'm currently on day 19, and the brown spots seem to be getting a little bigger on the lower leaves of 2 of my plants, but overall they seem pretty healthy. It would be a lot of work to re-pot all 30 plants and I'm kinda strapped on cash, but I might do it anyway. Since I've potted the plants they seem to be growing real fast. If I decide not to re-pot, how long should I wait before fertilizing again and what brands/NPK do you guys recommend?

yor veg nutes should read something like 30/15/10 and a flower nute should read 15/30/20 something along those lines. it dosen`t mater what the numbers are just as long as the n/p/k values are highest to lowest like those. for now i would just use plain ph`d water till the health comes around. few more days

whats this 30/15/10 all that shit mean
i havae some liquid plant food infront of me and it says the same thing now u got me scurred to use it
10-15-10 it says .1 iron and .05 maganese and zinc

the ratio i`m talking about. 10/15/10 means the same as 1/5/1. it was meant to understand that some companies use different numbers. like .05 people think its no good because of the low number. the number isn`t that important but more so the ratio`s.
what i`m saying is you need nitrogen to have the highest number then the phosphorus then the potasium for veg. and for flower phosphorus highest then potasium then nitrogen. the closer you get to harvest you can lower the nitrogen. i use cal-mag to help for the yellowing in the end (nitrogen)

here`s a little info for the mg growers on how to make mg`s products work.

FOR MIRACLE GROW NUTES :

If you really MUST use Miracle Grow Nutes or Soil cuz there isn't anything else available (cost can't be a reason, MG is about the same price as some organics !)

THEN USE THIS GUIDE PLEASE!!!

(enough for 2-3 plants .. just use more jugs for more plants!)
Get regular miracle grow (Not tomato or Rose food or azalea formula!)
AND Blossom Booster (or Schultz Professional Bloom food)
get 2- 1 gallon jugs of spring water from the store (about $1 each)
and an empty jug. Mark them (A) (B) & (C) --- (B) is the empty jug!

in the 1st jug (A) mix the MG at 1/4 the recomended rate for indoor plants.

In the 2nd jug (C), mix at 1/2 stregnth for indoor plants.

pour 1/2 of both into the empty jug (B)

Now-- when your plants get their 3rd set of leaves, feed once every 10 days. Start with (A) for the 1st 2 feed... then (B).. and end-up with (C) the week before you go 12/12.

FLUSH YOUR PLANTS WITH 5 GALLONS OF CLEAR WATER BEFOR GOING 12/12!

MG builds up-- and will lock-up as you add the stronger bloom nutes!
as the final part of the flush-- pour in a couple pints of your new bloom nutes (see below)

Do the same with your bloom nutes, Mix ahead in larger amounts... BUT--mix Jug (A) at 1/2 rate, Jug (C) at full stregnth-- and (B) the 2 mixed.

Start with (A) the 1st day of 12/12, then again in 10 days,
then switch to (B). Do not switch to (C) until the week before you flush for harvest!
when the trichomes just start turning cloudy, give em their last dose. In 10 days, check the trichs again.. if not all cloudy, you can feed again-- But go back to (B)

MAKE SURE TO FLUSH WELL AND WAIT THE FULL 2 WEEKS TO HARVEST!

You need to flush all the Nitrogen and magnesium out of the plants-- so Flush them well, put back in the bloom room the full 2 weeks till harvest, water as needed .. but absolutely no nutes or foliar sprays!

IF you foliar fed during the grow-- be sure to use a sprayer of water to gently shower it off the plants! (also gets rid of dead bugs & dust stuck to the buds!)

USING MG SOIL IS NEVER RECOMENDED!!
it has TIME RELEASED nutes-- so flushing is impossible... and you do not know how much nutes are being released or used by the plants.
If yYou Used MG soil, do NOT nute at all during veg... and use only additional P-K and suppliments without "N" during bloom...
And pre-harvest flushing can NOT be done on the normal 2 week schedule because of the time released nutes-- you must emergency flush when the trichs are how ya want em...

Cut the plant off at soil level. Place plant in a bucket with enough PLAIN tapwater to cover the base, but not touch lower limbs or vegetation....

Add a bubbler to the bucket to help "fool" the plant into thinking it is still alive (this only works up to 4 days before they wilt!)
Tthe plant will now use the nutrients stored in it's system . Leave under the lights at least 2 days-- up to 4 (3 is the usual amount)
IF you are one who puts their plants in the dark the last 3 days, give em at least 24 hours under lights before ya do... the photosynthesis will help the plant flush out unused nitrogen.

When using MG Fertilizer (as well as Schultz or Peter's ) Watch for:
Clawing
brown dry spots
crinckling leaves
pale new growth
Yellowing

if these happen, flush the plant, and wait 2-3 days before feeding again.
If Using MG soil and this happens, your best route is to re-plant in a bigger planter with different soil... DO NOT try to remove the existing soil from the roots of the plant!!!!

Good luck--
MG may not be the best-- but it CAN work!

HOPE THIS HELPS CLEAR UP THE "HOW DO I USE THIS" QUESTIONS!!!

wow what a post nice work + rep for you.And to those saying that his 10-15-10 would not work.... well it will as long as it has ample nitrogen the plant will be fine.Nutrients only support plant growth they don't force flowering or any of the stuff i hear floating around,if anything the phosphorus helps support better flower growth but it does not make the plant flower, nor will having a higher P then N stunt the plant in vegetative growth. If you want you can always use your 10-15-10 and also add a little extra nitrogen maybe organic stuff, just as long as they get a good amount of nitrogen they will grow big and healthy:blsmoke:
