So, a buddy of mine usually gives me a pinch or 2 of outdoor weed he usually has and normally it's green. This however is brown. I broke a big bud in half and so far I dont see any mold or maybe I'm still wet behind the ears. Lol. What am I looking at? Can it be smoked? Below is a pic of bud and a look inside down the middle after I broke it in half. ....keep in mind the white dot in the middle is the stem where it broke. Help a brother with some good news, please.

it looks fine to me! ask your buddy what his dry/cure method was. im guessing it was cured in the sun. that will turn it brown. nothing wrong with that, just a different method than most people use nowadays since light will degrade the thc.
So, you don't see any red flags other than the fact its brown and reddish? ....no mold though? That's my biggest concern

Take dried bud in two hands and break it in half. When there is some kind of dust flying out of it and do not fall down fast (as broken trichromes do) and disappear than is probably something inside the bud. Anyway I do not see nothing wrong with that bud. Just roll it up and give it a try...

nope, that's what all buds used to look like back in the day. sun cure is a traditional way of drying and actually has some benefits over the current ways of hanging dry in an ac controlled environment and then curing in glass jars. different flavors and doesn't require as much of a humidity controlled environment for long term storage. i would even harbor a guess and say the suns UV rays help to kill off mold. If that is indeed fresh herb, and not leftovers from last years harvest, I think you are fine. Roll it up!
I remember being a youngster and the old heads laughing at us for smoking green weed and said it want ready yet. Once they tried it tho... lol
If you are really concerned use the best phone u can take a super up close shot and zoom in on it. A jewelers loupe or usb microscope would be better.

Im surprised nobody else has said it (if i didnt look it over) But thats very normal for purple strains to turn brown over a long period of time.

The bud is fine I've had bud do that to me it's when it's sitting in too hot of a place for too long it might not taste as good but it will be fine
