Breeding vs. Growing

I am still trying to get my mind around the deltas between breeders and growers. Is a similar comparison doctors (breeders) vs nurses (growers.) Just wanted to understand the skill sets, what is similar and what is different. Any insights appreciated.

Plant breeding is the art and science of changing the genetics of plants in order to produce desired characteristics.[1] Plant breeding can be accomplished through many different techniques ranging from simply selecting plants with desirable characteristics for propagation, to more complex molecular techniques

Horticulture is the science, technology, and business involved in intensive plant cultivation for human use. It is practiced from the individual level in a garden up to the activities of a multinational corporation. It is very diverse in its activities.

I think all the above answers are perfect, top notch.

But I'm actually surprised bmeat hasn't posted a reply to this yet. Can't wait :bigjoint:

You can make a lot of money both ways, if you can find an outlet to sell your seeds you can really bank. Sell your seeds on seed bay.

Think dogs. You have the breeders who have the male and female who make the puppies, and then the growers who buy the puppies and raise them.

Unfortunately, that is a bad analogy. That's like saying if I just grow a male and female plant and get seeds out of the deal.

Some dog breeders are very concerned about history, genetics, and so on. MJ breeders are also very concerned about genetics and so on. It is easy for anyone to cross-pollinate a plant. However, that is not a new strain. To take that and turn it into something stable that produces seeds that give the same results again and again - that is part of what breeding is all about.
