Breeder's Estimated Flowering Times

This may seem like a stupid question, but when a breeder states that a particular strain's flowering time is approximately 8 weeks, does that mean 8 weeks from 12/12 or 8 weeks from the appearance of the first flowers?

Flowering starts the moment you switch so I guess they mean 8 weeks from switch. However, breeders most likely quote time needed to finish in best growing conditions possible so an average grower with less than perfect setup may need a bit longer.

The general consensus is that flowering begins 1-2 weeks after you switch to 12/12, for the hormonal transition period the plant goes through from veg production to flower production

Not here to argue or anything but I myself would class that hormonal transition period as "stage 1" of flowering. Been looking into this for a while now and so far I`m not entirely sure that there actually is a general consensus on that particular subject. Care to provide some valuable links?

My crystals generally seem to ripen closer to the advertised flowering time after I see sex showing. Sometimes it only take a day or two, sometimes it takes a week. I have been asking this myself and even putting in parenthesis (from switch) or (from sex showing) lately. I do think showing sex is the closest to actual time for flowering, but willing to change my opinion.
