I've been reading C.J. Box for a while, he's known primarily for his fictional Joe Pickett adventures (Wyoming Fish and Game warden). His latest had a terrifingly real description of a grizzley bear charge. @GreatwhiteNorth a series I'm sure you'd like.
I shall check Amazon for that one, it sounds interesting.
Speaking of Grizzly bear charges, remind me to tell you a couple of 1st hand accounts of white knuckle experiences with my big furry friends.

Currently I'm re-reading Peter Matthiessen's "Shadow Country" - a trilogy about late 1800, early 1900's life on Florida's SW frontier coast that is based on history.
Cool story & I have personal ties to the area which makes it that much more interesting.
Beware of the Watson's payday.

Edit: Which books to you recommend - I see several.

@GreatwhiteNorth Unfortunately, they're pretty much meant to be read starting from the first as it follows Joe's life and times, family and job. The later one's may not make sense on some of the detail if you don't know the back story. His last one "Off the Grid" is the one with the grizz attack in it. Nate is his long time "outlaw" type friend, a master falconeer, who's on the run from the "G". His fav weapons are a .454 Casull and a .500WE. He's basically a good guy. Start with this one and see what you think. I also just read the "The Revenant", which was pretty good.

I read these decades ago:

Rocky Mountain Rendezvous: A History of The Fur Trade 1825 – 1840 - Fred Gowans
The Saga of Hugh Glass: Pirate, Pawnee, and Mountain Man - John Myers Myers

and this one a short while back:

Cowboys, Mountain Men, and Grizzly Bears: Fifty of the Grittiest Moments in the History of the Wild West - Matthew P. Mayo

I usually just get them from the library. I realize your local lib may not have much depth, but ask them if they have a "Inter Library Loan" program. Our's does and gets books for me from all over the state and college's as well.

I too read the Hugh Glass saga many years ago - had to read it again after the movie came out.
I hope cinema does it justice.

Have you been through Crow Killer by Raymond W. Thorp?
Much of it is speculation on the historical record and recollections of his compatriots, and yet still a remarkable piece of frontier literature.

As far as our library goes, it's filled with down on their luck commercial fishing hands most of the time.
They kick them out of the shelter around 7 in the morning & that's the first place they go & just hang out all day - sometimes 20-30 of them being obnoxious hung-over drunks.

My library is Amazon for obvious reasons.

Patrick O'Brian--Master and Commandre series. Who would think reading about the Royal Navy in the early 1800s would be so riveting.

Lee Childs--Jack Reacher series is quite fun. First book is fantastic.

All of the James Clavell books are awesome. Shogun, Tai-Pan

Killer Angels--super civil war book.

All Mark Frost books...

Oh come on Tolstoy is good although he does belabor points.

I too could go on and on.

Currently...
Medieval Sieges and Siegecraft by Geoffrey Hindley

And
Shantaram by
Gregory David Roberts

I've not gotten into sifi/fantasy stuff for years, but one of my favorite writers is Robert E. Howard & the Chronicles of Conan remains one of my favorite books.
I remember reading the individual books in soft back in the 70's.
ive read the same conan books & every one of them is excellent

Ok ok just amazon one-clicked.

Here's a couple more...
Gates of Fire and The Legend if Bagger Vance by Steven Pressfield.

Most all Iain Banks and Iain M. Banks books. His first..."The Wasp Factory" is trippy. His Sci-Fi is awesome.

Dirty White Boys is a page turner. I cannot believe this isn't a movie yet. ...and that's not just because I am hung like Lamar.
