Not sure about the food grade plastic to tell the truth.
The dreaded "runaway" yes it means one carrot is overwatering and is flooding your shit, some people loose the whole res if they don't notice in time. When it's happened to me I've been lucky and I have caught it before it lost more then a few litres. They can happen for a number of reasons. Is why you have to follow all the right steps when setting them up or you could loose your res. Also if ever your in your room and you bump a pot or handle a pot roughly its a good idea to push the carrot back down in said pot to make sure it's seated in good, some people have bumped a pot to come in the next day to find it runaway because the carrot became a little loose in its hole and wasn't in contact with all the soil so it thinks it needs to water and doesn't stop till you notice or your res runs out.

sustainable village is great. I recommend skipping the kit and just buying the parts you need. The hard black plastic tubing the kit comes with sucks, the red flex tube is much easier to work with.

-1 carrot per plant with 3-4 drip emitters in a ring around the trunk worked well for me. I also bought a quick disconnect fitting for every carrot so I could take plants out if needed.

I have everything set up but not turned on. Long story short I was going out of town over the holidays but pet surgery changed that and I kinda like to hand water so I haven't turned it on yet.

I'm a little worried about flooding on an ongoing basis so I'm not sure when I will turn it on but I guess I'll take the plunge (no pun intended) and turn it on sometime soon.

I agree with this. I may buy some emitters at some point, but I'm growing in roughly 1/2 gallon pots so it's unnecessary. I forgot to mention that. Also my plants are tilting their pots because of the scrog net, so I can direct the dripping tube to the highest point and let gravity work its magic. That was a blessing in disguise.

Do it in the morning and monitor them throughout the day. Chances are they will be fine overnight. Also get them dialed in before you decide to leave on vacation. It takes a few weeks to get down. I hand water them during that period to "restart" the process. and fine tune every morning until they are locked in perfectly. I still hand water every few days to flush excessive salts out, and just because I also like doing it. Especially when it isn't a daily chore.

Yes the quick connects are really handy I have them on all my carrots. Tip, when u hooking use white out pen to mark where you have the knob set so when you put plant back in you can set it back to right position

They're easy to dial in. Just keep an eye on them for a day and walk away. The reservoir needs to be higher than the carrots. Gravity takes care of the rest. Mines 3ft off the floor so about 2ft above the carrot taking the pot height into account.

I think if you have big enough pots you can do this, but I still have to fiddle with them a bit here and there.

It a pump for the blumats so that you don't have to elevate the res. You have to buy a pressure reducer though.
