(CBS/AP) BROOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - An ex-convict has confessed to beating and strangling his 24-year-old neighbor as part of a sexual fantasy, hiding her body, and then returning to her home and helping her three-year-old son get costumed for Halloween, authorities said Thursday.

John D. White was arraigned Thursday on first-degree murder charges and ordered jailed without bond.
According to an affidavit that was used in his arrest warrant, White admitted that for two weeks he thought about killing Rebekah Gay and having sex with her dead body.
White told investigators he went to Gay's trailer about 2 a.m. Wednesday, struck her head repeatedly with a mallet, then strangled her with a zip tie. He said he stripped her body but did not remember carrying out a sex act.
Authorities say White led them to Gay's body, half a mile from the home in Isabella County's Broomfield Township.
Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski told reporters that White had known Gay for some time but was not a close friend.
Gay's three-year-old son was home at the time his mother was killed, Mioduszewski said, but was unharmed.
After using his pickup truck to move Gay's body, the mallet and bloody towels, White returned to her trailer, the sheriff said. He said White took care of the boy in the morning, dressed him in his Halloween costume and took him to an area Meijer store to be picked up by his father.
A judge appointed a public defender to represent White, who is scheduled to return to court Nov. 8.
White told the judge that he was a church employee until Wednesday. White's church affiliation was not mentioned in court, but Christ Community Fellowship church elder Donna Houghton told WOOD-TV that White was a pastor at the church in Mount Pleasant.
White served prison terms for assault with intent to murder and for manslaughter and was released in 2007, the Michigan Department of Corrections told WLNS-TV.
The manslaughter conviction was for killing Vicky S. Wall in 1994 in Kalamazoo County, the Kalamazoo Gazette reported at the time.

(Newser) – A Pennsylvania woman who apparently decided that wild ducks needed her help to escape superstorm Sandy's wrath was arrested after jumping into a fast-moving creek to "rescue" a group of 20 or 30 birds, WGAL reports. Her four-year-old child started to follow her and was grabbed by a neighbor, but it took eight firefighters to rescue the woman from the neck-high creek. The 41-year-old, whose blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit for driving, has been charged with risking a catastrophe.

this is one i would not like but those "20 or 30" would fit into pads view of who to leave behind, the woman with no regards to her own nor her young daughters life in this situation. this lady needs to reevaluate what is important in life. drunk and bad weather does not giver her the excuse to save wiled geese in a storm.

(Newser) – Vigilante groups have sprung up in Egypt to combat the country's chronic sexual harassment problem. Women have long faced catcalls, groping, and assaults on Egypt's streets and police tended to ignore the problem during the years of authoritarian rule, the New York Times reports. The citizens' groups that have started patrolling Cairo seek to shame both the abusers and authorities who look the other way. Some groups avoid violence, while others confront suspects and haul them to police stations.


During a recent patrol, "we caught some harassers, sprayed them with paint and published their pictures everywhere," the leader of one group says. "The Interior Ministry wasn’t cooperating with us at all. They weren’t protecting women in the streets." The groups' activities appear to have spurred the government to take action. A spokesman for President Mohamed Morsi says more than a thousand complaints of harassment were received during the recent Eid al-Adha holiday and the president has ordered authorities to investigate. "Egypt’s revolution cannot tolerate these abuses," he said.

[h=3]Monday, November 5, 2012 9:59am PST[/h][h=2]Diver's capture of a beloved giant Pacific octopus sparks outrage[/h][h=3]By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com[/h]For scuba divers off Seattle's Cove 2, one of the coolest sightings is that of a giant Pacific octopus, an intelligent and mysterious creature that is a master of disguise and, thus, typically elusive.

And apparently, one of the most uncool acts is to capture and kill one of these remarkable creatures, especially while other divers are present.

That's what Dylan Miller, 19, did during a recent dive, and the episode went viral. Critics surfaced on dive sites, blogs and social media platforms, hammering Miller even though he had a fishing license and did not violate any laws.

He said he killed the 80-pound octopus to draw it for an art project, and for its meat. But he has since received threats and, like an octopus, is trying to keep a low profile.

"They value the life of an octopus and they are threatening a family," Denise Mayer, Dylan's mom, told the Seattle Times. "They put his life below that of an octopus. It's gone way overboard."

The story first appeared on the Northwest Dive Club website on the day of the capture, on Halloween.

A witness posted a complaint that Miller not only grabbed the enormous mollusk and hauled it out of the water, he punched it in the head, or mantle area, and bragged that he might be back soon to catch others.

The witness blogger, under the name Grateful Diver, stated that during his confrontation with Miller, Miller boasted: "It's legal, and there's lots of them down there. I might come back tomorrow and get another one."

Divers were so enraged that they created a petition to "Save the GPO" from being harvested in the region, as the giant Pacific octopus is regarded as an icon throughout the Pacific Northwest.

The Daily Mail in the U.K. quoted witness Bob Bailey as saying, "It's just not done. It's bad form. Even if you can do it, you shouldn't do it."

The giant Pacific octopus is the world's largest octopus. The largest known specimen measured 30 feet across.

They're are known for their ability to change colors and blend with their surroundings, and for their intelligence. Captive specimens have learned to open jars and solve puzzles.

Cove 2 divers regard their site as a marine park, where creatures should be observed and not captured, even though it's not officially designated as a protected park.

A Washington state game warden investigated the case and determined no laws were broken.

Denise Mayer said the home telephone has been ringing so often that she answers with the greeting, "Octo-Mom."

Mayer told the Seattle Times that he punched the mollusk because it had wrapped its arms around his mask, nose and mouth. (State law mandates that the only way octopuses can be harvested is by hand, an extreme challenge when the specimen in question weighs 80 pounds.)

"I do feel sorry," Mayer said. "If I would have known that these people were that protective over it, I wouldn't have done it."

But, he added: "If people feel this strongly about it they obviously need to voice it and a sign needs to go up and make it a park. But I don't think all of Puget Sound should be off-limits. That is like saying you like deer so there should be no hunting, or you like cows, so there should be no meat."
