Its a nice thought at first, then I start seeing all the small holes that eventually cause the 'boat to sink'. Seems to be a lot of security issues, also seems likely it will start as a libertarian government, and some how end up an elite democracy.

This is actually completely plausible. If it wasnt it obviously wouldnt have investors spending millions on it already. Someone before answered most of the issues: Food would eventually be grown or caught nearby to efficiently feed the people living on the structure. Water can be taken from a great deal of places, not the least being right underneath them with the salt being removed, which is energy consuming but not impossible. The no minimum wage thing is kind of disheartening though.

yes, but these islands arent natural... natural islands have food and waste resources kinda covered, and obviously they work, most islands have been around for a very long time.

but these are islands built of glass and steel... not the same at all
