hi,

First off, i'm subscribed b/c I think you have the furthest along vk journal on the site. props.

i have vanilla kush going right now and have a question for you. Were your vk's stems purple about 2 1/2-3 weeks from germination. Right now i have what i think is nute burn, but some think it is a mag deficiency (from lockout) because of the purple stem. Could you check out my post and tell me if the purple stem is genetic. I think it is, b/c they had some purple in them from the get go. Thanks for the input and here is the link:

Hey there MM! I took a look at your journal and there's a ton of different opinions in there on your issue, but as you said, I don't think there's any issue with them at all - it's still too early to tell really. I've seen purple stems on my seedlings more than once, and it's never appeared to be a bad thing. If you see any hints on the leaves then that's when you can better tell what's wrong if anything. I noticed the leaves a quite a 'dark green' - from what i've read, that may mean they've got a little more N than needed, but still it's too soon to worry about anything yet I'd say. I didn't give my VK much nutrients (or anything) at all in their first 2-3 weeks and they didn't seem to mind - very vigorous growth without anything but straight rain water. :weed:

Notes...

- lots of yellowing leaves due to the lack of nitrogen I believe, but it hasn't slowed the bud growth any, and really there's only a few more weeks to go (about 3 by the looks of it) so I'm not too worried. I'll let them go as long as necessary but I'm seeing more and more browning off of hairs now so it's getting closer and closer.
- the smell is really getting sweet in the tent now. Brushing up against the buds leaves a sweet smell that I could swear has a slight vanilla odor to it! There's also a strong citrus smell in there which is also strong from the Crimea Blue plants.
- the Crimea Blue is developing some monster buds - a bit leafy but as they fill out, i'm impressed more and more with how they're looking.
- a few tops were scorched a little from the light but I'm moved the plants around so they all work and aren't too close to the glass. I've been able to get the light nice and close while keeping anything from getting too close to the 'hot spot' created by these cool tube lights.

.........................................

Here we are just past the 6 week mark of flowering and I see there hasn't been a picture update for a while now... the girls are really looking great and I got some nice shots this evening...the last 4 are of the Crimea Blue. Enjoy!!!! :weed:

how long did you veg them. couldn't tell if it was seven or eight weeks. How tall were they at end of veg? Also, how tall are they now.
Thanks for taking a look at my post by the way.

They look great, really beautiful. I would give them some more nitrogen so you don't get any leaves dropping if you have 3 weeks to go.

These girls vegged for barely 7 weeks. I wanted to put them into flower at ~6 weeks but I had my Red Dragons finishing off their flowering cycle and ended up going an extra week so these had to wait. Without the LST they received, it would have been a much more challenging squeeze under my lights. I think the next grow I have started will get a much more strict LST regiment as I'd like to spread the plants out a bit more and get more light to more tops.

They were about 1.5 feet tall on average when they were put into 12/12 and now they average around 3 feet give or take 6 inches. One of the VK plants is actually sitting on a styrofoam brick to keep it level with the others - that one is only about 2.5 feet tall.

No problem with looking at your post there - looks like it got a bit out of control on you, how are your plants doing now?

I agree about the Nitrogen, but since i'm already pushing 7 weeks I don't like the thought of giving them any N at this point since it's not supposed to be good to add it during flowering. I've tried to stay 100% organic with my grows since the smoke turns out so much more tasty and I don't need to do a ton of flushing at the end (although I do give them a good final flush). They'll be getting a decent dose of molasses in the next watering (tomorrow or Friday) to help push out a bit more resin. The last few grows I've used molasses in the last 4 weeks of flowering and have been getting some awesome crystally buds! I actually only use about 3 feedings of flowering nutes during flowering and use the organic 'Iguana Juice' from AN along with their 'Nirvana' - the results speak for themselves! :leaf:

Thanks a lot!! Another 2 Barney's Farm strains showing their wonderful genetics! I still consider myself a beginner in the grow room - it's so great to have strains that are so easy to grow and perform so well. Unlike some people who have had bad luck with BF, I can't recommend them enough. :weed:

No idea man...maybe start a new post in the Plant Problems section of the forum instead of in my journal. Anyhoo, maybe give your plants a nice flush - give'm a rest from the nutes and when you try them again, dial them back to half as much and go from there..? Good luck! :peace:

Nearing the end of week 7 in flowering, the girls are really starting to gear down and lose foliage. Lots of yellowing leaves due to lack of N, but they've been almost all fan leaves low on the branches so I'm not too worried, especially this close to the end. Ideally they'd get some N to fix it but I don't want to ruin the final taste by messing with it anymore at this point. The buds are looking fantastic (one top bud is around 3" in diameter!) and i'm guessing to be looking at about 8.5 oz dry from these 5 plants! I'd guess theres about 2 more weeks until the flushing starts - a good dose of molasses and Nirvana this weekend followed by another straight watering on Mon or Tues.

The VK plants give off the most wonderful smell on your fingers when trimming and handling them! It's intoxicating just sitting inside the tent to work on them - quite impressed so far!

what kind of LST did you do? I'm thinking about tying down some of my plants b/c they are so bushy. Also, did you top or use any other techniques to increase yield?

Your wish is my command!! Watch a little later on this evening for another round of pic updates!

It was a fairly unagressive LST - when they were about 6" tall I bent them over once just above the first node and tied them to the side. They were in 6" pots at the time, so they stayed tied down for only about 2 weeks before getting transplanted into the 20 litre pots at which time I removed the strings. It seemed to give them enough resistance to develop 4-5 nice tops on each, but I never did top any of these plants. The Crimea Blue plant lost a major leaf at the first stages of growth and developed strangely from that point on... but it's really bounced back with 3 huge stalks!

As for other methods, I experimented quite extensively this round with stem 'twisting' about 3-4 weeks into flower. By this, what I did was 'twist the thick stalk stems about 8-9 inches below the top end-buds. I twist it pretty hard until I hear a lsight snap and/or 'crunch' sound. Bruising the stems like that forces the plant to push more food to them and actually builds bigger buds! I'm sold on the idea after this time and will be sure to incorporate that method every grow from now on.

Awesome - great to hear! I looked through your journal and that LST'd plant looks really nice! My next grow is about 2 weeks in and I think I'll try your LST method with my Pineapple Chunk this time and really tied them down good. Welcome!
