Best way to revive a classic strain.

So I've got 25 seeds from what I believe has a great possibility of being NL#5 circa 1993. Although a huge long shot I'm going to try to pop some of those for my next grow as soon as my current grow finishes up (about 6 weeks). In the event that I get some seeds to pop would I be better off to pollinate whatever females and males I get and then pheno hunt after the first grow OR would I be better off pheno hunting the first grow and only pollinating the best males and females? I know its a long shot but I'm really looking forward to giving it the college try. Within this same find theres also about 25 seeds of a completely unknown origin I would also like to try and germinate.. Thanks in advance.

Always expand your genetics first. Then begin phenohunting after you're sure you've preserved your genetic line. Especially with older genetics. I wish you the best of luck on this.

following. I have some 10 plus yr old seeds that were the best strain of bananna kush Ive ever grown. They were super growers for about 5 yrs. sadly one year with at least a 100 seeds remaining they stopped germing. The end. Ive tried scratch n stuff and most other suggestions. I will say the last year they took several weeks to germ and much later then normal with many other seeds I was trying at the same time germ and were weeks old plants so I trashed the prized late germ seeds thinking I still had many seeds remaining for future grows. I now see why grower loose strains and why we see the children plants and many just don't have the full attributes of the mother. My learning exp is now after about yr 3 produce new seeds or loose em forever......

Id open pollinate whatever males and females make it the first run before making a second selective open pollination and go from there to increase numbers as others already said thats the best way to go

What i would do is just grow out the females save some mixed pollen from the male,Flower out the females pic the ones you like reveg an clone them. Then think about chucking pollen.

what do you mean by "expand your genetics first"?
grow all those out that germinate and then open pollenate instead of being selective?
Yes, then when you have ample seeds you can hunt as long as you want/need and you have preserved all the combinations and permutations of that line. That way there are extras in case you are working a line and lose some. You have plenty back. Anyway just how I do it, other people have their own ways that are just as valid.

thanks for response/clarification. appreciated.

yeah. makes sense. especially having extras in case mistakes are made along the line. just could be a LOOOONG hunt if you end up with a lot of seeds.

have you had any success getting seeds that old to go?

Yes, research gibberellins and humidity. There are some good hemp studies out there too. I'd normally have a cite but just dabbed some White Papaya and that might be beyond my ability at the moment.

I wouldn’t waste my time, they aren’t gunna pop.
30 years old and 25 beans has no chance at if you ask me.

No offence but the ‘dreaming’ is sometimes a curse.

You really have to narrow down what’s probable from what’s possible in this game or you waste too much time.

NL5 is still out there and done better than you will achieve with unknown beans.
Just spend money on fresh NL5 beans.

If you want to preserve something don’t try to resurrect dead beans. Get it fresh and make a bag full. Then remake it every five years. Anything else is just dreaming.

Point me in the direction of some real NL5 and I just might do that?

Edit: and wasting a couple of weeks trying to pop some seeds isn't really all that much of a loss.

Yeah a few weeks poppin em might not be but an open pollination from ‘whatever’ pops and so forth is likely a total waste of time.

And CSI have it from what I know. You want Northern Lites not lights for the real deal apparently.

Go forth and multiply - but with good stock.
Good luck.
