I have a 4'x2'x5' grow tent in a spare room in my apt. i'm worried because of the new smelly strain that will start flowering soon (ak47, chemdawg ibl)....
Whats the best way to set-up for odor... I have a 4" 265cfm active airblower sitting on top of the tent, it exhaust hot air from one of the top vents... what I wanted to do was add a piece of duct to the exhaust flange and blow through a new carbon filter I purchased... what worries me is that the exhaust fan seems very powerful... I didn't want to have to put the filter inside the tent, I want to push exhaust through the filter instead of pulling from inside.. would this set-up be effective for odor control????
The problem is, I rent in a two family home, and there is a central air system in the house, I have already duct tape shut the vent in the spare room along with some others, I also have a gallon of Ona gel, that I will place by the return of the central air system which is located by my living room...I have already had several harvest here but never with as smelly a strain as this supposed to be so I just purchased the fan, filter and ona gel as an upgrade for odor control...

ONe thing you need to make sure of is the cfm rating of your carbon filter. If it is a good quality filter the manufacturer should had given a cfm rating on the filter as to what cfm it can effectivley scrub all odors. If the fan is to much cfm you could always get a fan speed controller and slow it down, if your temps allow you to do so.

Will the filter be just as effective inside the tent as it would outside? pulling air through the filter vs pushing it through the filter?

ideally, you want the filter inside the tent... the fan can actually be outside of the tent..

Starting with a hanging filter in the tent, the ducting goes to a cool tube (glass tube that the bulb and socket are mounted in) and from the cool tube, ducting to the fan.. if the fan is inside the tent, you will need ducting to run outside of the tent (preferably outside the grow room, its odorless and slightly warm so it shouldn't matter if you just attached it to a register and mounted it in a wall looking like a typical furnace register) if the fan is outside the tent, you run the ducting to the fan and so on..

Doing it this way... if your fan is powerful enough.. your tent will have a complete vacuum... clean air from the room will be sucked in the little gaps and holes of the tent.. The smells will travel from the plant straight to the filter, eliminating the smell, then the air is drawn across the bulb cooling the bulb and eliminating some moisture in the air, and lastly the air is pulled through the fan and sent out of the room..

Most filters are designed to work better in one direction... and that is drawing air through the filter vs. pushing it.

I have an oversized setup incase I want to expand, my filter is has a 3 year warranty running at 100% capacity, my fan, a five year on 24/7... so for the next three years, no smell what so ever.. well worth the few hundred I dropped on them...

Good luck wit your setup....

Those tiny carbon filters they sell work wonders. I have a 440cfm fan pulling through the smallest one I could find for my 4x4x6' tent and it does the job great. All air is pulled through my filter, then my hood (keeps the dust out this way) and then out of the tent. I'm able to have my fan mounted outside of the enclose which is nice.

Rep for that nice tent!
I really don't want to hang that filter in there, it's pretty heavy and I don't want to place it inside on the floor because it takes to much space ... I don' have a cool tube in this tent, I have a seperate small fan blowing on the 600watt hid...
