Just wondering if there is such a thing as a best all around strain for, desirability, yield, in hydro vs none, price, fool proof growing etc.

No, silly, any time you say best its just a matter of opinion. Although if you looking for a good easy grow I've always heard of northern lights as being the jump off point. I don't know anybody that would turn down some NL either.

This is like asking what's the "best" tomato strain.

Different strains exist for different reasons. Some are tall, some are short. Some are fruity. Some are citrusy. Some are spicy. Some are "musky". Some are really resinous and are good for making hash. Some are really potent, others less so. Some do better outdoors. Some do better in dry weather. Some do better in humid weather. Some are more pest resistant. Some have nice colors. Some have a more "stony" high, some have a more "stimulating" high, etc.

So the answer is, there is no one "best" strain. Any strain will have various characteristics that might be good or bad, depending on what exactly you're looking for. Some of these things (flavor, smell, and "high" quality) are also highly subjective. At best there is only the strain that you like best, or maybe the one that works best for your particular growing conditions.

If you want a good place to start, Northern lights and Skunk #1 are two old-school strains of high potency that are easy to grow under a variety of conditions, pest and abuse resistant, and give good yields. These are also still popular enough that lots of breeders offer their own versions, meaning they're both easy to find and relatively inexpensive.
