Looking for a solid suggestion.
Not interested in a volcano type
Portable, sleek and just overall good craftsmanship is what I'm more interested in.
The ability to burn wax too, would be a plus.

The Might by Storz and Bickel: powerful, long battery life, great hits, durable, great design.

'Highly' recommend the Arizer Solo II. Heats up fast, holds the temperature very stable and has very long battery life on a charge. I have many friends that have tried the Firefly and PAX sort of vapes but they don't use them and I think they always burn the flower. I have two retired Solo I up on my shelf and two active Solo IIs (one for backup in case the other needs a charge). It is not the most stealth unit for sure but I prefer something that works and works well. The woman and I use them everyday and you can get blind fucking stoned on it. As for wax and dabs just get one of those Kandy Pen type of things. One thing I notice about switching to vaping is getting used to not having the carbon monoxide head rush you get from combustion, but you will not miss the lung chunks from smoking. I will also add that the II is very upgraded from the first model; I couldn't go back to it.

Hey, I'm an old guy just getting back into growing and smoking. Someone in another thread suggested a dry herb vape pen was potentially healthier than rolling or using a pipe. I'm not looking for recommendations on a brand or model. I want to know what features make a purchase decision for you.

Caution, rant follows....

I'm not interested in "the best". Honestly, the internet obsession with the "best this" or the "best that" drives me crazy. Shit like that is for lazy people that just want to be told what to do. Or assholes who want to argue for superiority to make their dick hard. Let's face it, what is the best car? Bugatti Veyron? Koenigsegg Regera? Whatever. If you're a soccer mom or dad the best car is probably a fucking minivan.

So.... Rather than discussing what is the "best" dry herb vape pen,
  • What features in a dry herb vape pen are essential for you?
  • What are "nice to have" features if you can get them?
I'm an engineer with sourcing/manufacturing contacts throughout the US and Asia and can pretty much specify what I want. What features should I be looking for? What should I be designing for?

Thanks!

idk the best car, but i can tell you the fastest one i ever drove was a rental.

the only feature you care about is the consistency/quality of the vapor produced. the best dry herb vapes are made by storz and bickel hands down and money spent on any others is wasted.

Thanks. I'm a total newb on this. What's important about the separate mesh basket? Does it make cleaning easier? I assume the mesh is stainless steel? Do you know if there is a mesh size that is better for dry herb or wax?

What are the factors that are important to you? battery life? easy to clean? simple to use the buttons/controls? how about size of the basket? how many grams dry will it hold? bigger is better?

When I bought mine a few years back I was pushed towards the PAX3 (has an add-on kit for extracts). Seems this product is still a current model, has PAX fallen down the list over the years? Or was I mislead into believing PAX3 was top of the line for portable vapes at one time?

What does "the consistency/quality of the vapor produced" mean? good vape from start to finish? good vape no matter what strain or grind you use?

I think you're missing the point. Assume I can specify whatever feature set I want. The question is not "what brand is the best". The question is, "what makes this brand the best?" or, even better, "what makes this brand or model the best for you?"

I'm not looking for a blind recommendation for a brand or model of dry herb vape pen. I want to understand what factors, in your opinion, make one vape pen better than another. examples:
  • It's slim. it fits in my pocket
  • It has great battery life
  • It holds enough weed to last me all day until I get home
  • Easy to clean = I can really taste the difference when i switch strains
  • Replaceable basket. I can pack more than one for the day - or - I can pack more than one strain for the day -or - I can pack enough to share
  • Flows great. I can hit it super hard.
  • Super easy to use. I don't have to fuck with a bunch of buttons.
  • Has LED's so i know if it's on or off. It times out automatically.

I like how small it is, and the general look and feel.

I don't like having to take "small sips" from it.

I have a very high tolerance, and it only holds about .5 grams, I need to vape around 4 ovens full which takes forever!

I end up needing to repack it a few times to feel properly medicated and clearing out and repacking the oven on the bottom is a PITA so it's generally not actually portable for me as I can't be constantly repacking it everywhere I go!

If I do use it, I usually need to smoke a joint or two first, then I use it to top up periodically if I'm out and about, so I'm not seeing any health benefit, and barely any stealth benefit.

Thanks. "small sips" means you can't pack enough into the vape or you can't hit it hard enough?

So you're thinking you would like a pen that holds, like, 2 grams? Is increased size an acceptable tradeoff or would you prefer an easy to swap cartridge?

Oh sorry I missed that you wanted a "pen" type. The only one I've owned of those is a Pax 2 and it's a certified POS.

I stick with my first response tho the only thing you care about is quality and consistency of vapor. What good is battery life if your rips taste like shit. I'd check out the Crafty and Mighty from S&B and not get anything more pen-like than that.

Thanks. "small sips" means you can't pack enough into the vape or you can't hit it hard enough?
Can't hit it hard enough. For the oven in the PAX to work right, you have to go relatively slow so the heat works through the brick of packed flower, and if you pull too long, you cool it too much and have to wait very briefly for it to re-heat (very short, but it adds up).

So you're thinking you would like a pen that holds, like, 2 grams? Is increased size an acceptable tradeoff or would you prefer an easy to swap cartridge?
When you say it that way, 2 grams sounds excessive. I don't necessarily need more in the device, just a more convenient way to reload it.

I have often thought how nice it would be if I could get a vape that works with reusable cartridges I could then pre-load with ground flower. I could just pop them out and pop in a new cartridge on the go. It doesn't solve the ability to take larger more fulfilling hits, but it would solve the ability to reload without needing shelter from wind and making a mess.

I can't really switch to concentrates (which would just solve the problem), as I am growing my own but no ability to create usable extracts for a vaporizer. I'm not really interested in buying concentrates over and above my current costs.
