Beginner Grass grower with noob problem... help?

First off, I'm new to the forums, so hello all!

I'm a veteran smoker :joint:, but am just now experimenting with growing (tired of paying for pot). I've studied up and decided to germinate some seeds from some different quality levels of my recent stashes. I have had some luck with getting mid- to low-grade seeds to sprout, but have had no luck with the better seeds. My method has been the moist paper-towel.

Of the seeds that sprouted tap-roots, I was unsure how long to leave them in the paper towel before putting them in soil. I left them in the paper-towels until the round leaves appeared, then put them in soil. I have them under a desk fluorescent light and they have not come out of the soil after 48 hours of non-stop lighting... Any suggestions??

did you put the little round leaves under the soil??? that would be a no no. plant them so the root is in the ground and the little leaves are out of the soil. I usually try to put it so that the leaves are no more than a centimeter out of the dirt. and let it grow from there.

Yea, quadrophine was right. Also, they definitely do not need to grow leaves before putting them in soil. Just wait until they have a tap root and then put them in the soil (root should be going down, since the plant obviously wants it to be that way). Then it should sprout out of the soil in 1 - 3 days, normally.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I uncovered the seedling so that the round leaves are just above the soil.

Any tips for germination techniques? Is it even practical to germinate prior to putting in soil?

Your technique is fine. And yes, it is definitely worth germinating before putting in the soil (higher success rate). The only other thing I'd recommend is to seal the moist paper towels with the seeds inside in a plastic bag to keep the humidity very high.

Oh, and I made a big typo before. I meant to say "they definitely do NOT need to grow leaves before putting them in soil." Good luck with your grow

For some reason, the past few times I've germinated seeds, they grow taproots and I wait until the root is between .25" and .75" before I put them in the soil and they never come up. Although, the plant I have now, I left it in the moist paper towel until the leaves were just getting ready to pop out of the seed. Then I put it in a small dish of water and set it in the window and within 2 days, the roots doubled in size and the seed not only came off, but the plant had its first set of true leaves starting to show. When I noticed this, I very carefully put it in soil at once. Now this plant is the healthiest looking plant I've ever had. Aside from the burns from the CFL falling on it, It's still going strong with only an inch or so between the soil and the leaves and 0 stretch between any of the sets of leaves. You can see pics in my grow journal (https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/44520-first-grow-bagseed-pics.html). Let me know how I'm doing so far!
