Basic Transplanting Questions

I currently have my plants growing in 6.3 in. clay pots with drainage holes on the bottom. I was wondering if I could simply allow the plant to grow outdoors in the 6.3 in. pots or if it would be better to plant them in the soil

It's probably going to be dependent on the condition of your native soil vs. the soil medium you would use in containers. With containers, I wouldn't use clay pots though because they're porous and absorb water. 6.3" pots are probably going to be too small for them as they get larger-- unless you plan on inducing flowering really early. Just keep checking to make sure they don't get root bound as they get bigger, and make sure they continue to drain well. Good luck, cheers.

i've never grown outdoors but those pots are too small. IMHO - either put them in larger containers or dig a nice big hole in the earth and fill it with good soil and go for it. i grow indoors and the smallest container i finish with is 3 gallons and i would prefer 5.

You could put them outside but you really should getsome bigger containers, depending on how big the plant is.. & it should b fine outside, just makesure to water them and makesure they are in the sun for most of the day.

I would recommend digging a large hole at least 10 gallons into the earth, then fill that hole with a good potting mix like Sunshine 4 or Fox Farm. The more roots you have the more buds you will get!

thanks guys. I was thinking 6.3 in. would be big enough but I'm thinking I might grow them a bit bigger in the pots and then transplant to the earth once they are a good enough size. I don't want to shock the plant too much when it's real young, and i also dont want to shock it anymore than the weather did last night. Maybe I'll transplant one to the earth and if it stays healthy and grows then I'll do the same with the others asap

dude, people move plants from small containers to bigger ones all the time. i've taken plants in peat pots to 1 gallon to 3 gallon to 5 gallon. they always seem to survive. i agree that the less stress the better but if they are healthy they can survive some moving around.

agreed bump them up to 5 gallons or make roughly 5 gallon holes in the earth and backfill with some good promix. Use mycorrhizae during tranplant if you can it helps a lot.
