That's an awful idea. 70w HPS bulbs aren't really efficient(max of 90 lm/W). Fluoros can beat that, and have far superior lumen maintenance.

I dont see why not. Try it? You can get a digital ballasts that make you able to set your wattage. You can also switch from MH to HPS with them.

All ballasts do is regulate the electricity that flows into your bulbs. If you were to try it, nothing bad would happen. A lot of people are scared of electricity. The most your outlet in the wall will pull is 120volts, so pretty much nothing will kill you that you plug unto an outlet. Give it a try, man.
