ballast placement

I hang my multi phase magnetic ballast with an old dog chain, about 18 inches from my cast aluminum 1000w highly reflective bonnet without the metal casing. High enough that there is no danger of me walking into it. There is heat sheiding attached to the ceiling above the ballast in the event that it should fry. I paid $250 for just the ballast two decades ago and it still works perfectly.

dog chain now thats agreat idea thnks for stoping by. my ballast is not that old maybe only a decade or so but I like what you got going on there. not sure I compleatly get what your saying about the bonnet. what is the heat shielding made of is it just sheetmetal or is it a oarticular product

Lumateks are bomb. You can find used ones on eBay for pretty cheap. Don't buy a 400. Buy two dimmable 600's.

Galaxy are also nice. I have two solis tells which people won't shut the fuck up about and one vibrates the arc tube

I would avoid the bad ass ballasts from advanced bullshit marketing and any other brand that you never heard of. Trust me. Once you go digital you will tell yourself "why the fuck did I waste all that time with mag ballasts?"

A 20yo mag ballast? With no coil replacement? Ummm someone doesn't understand coil electronics too much. Your probably loosing half your power by now.

My old magnetic just sits on a couple of blocks to keep air moving around it. In winter (in Alaska) I use the heat. In summer I vent it with a fan. I would think hanging it would cause a greater heat rise as no other objects can absorb it (Heat) on its way up.

i put a hook into the stud in the ceiling and just hang it from the handle on the ballast
i mean its a good size hook i drill a tap hole

It sounds like you have your ballast mounted up your arse, I would remove it from there as it seems to have contributed to your bad attitude.
