Ballast kit

I'm planning on wiring up a light with these plans (https://www.rollitup.org/do-yourself/8499-convert-common-home-security-light.html) but all the fixtures I can find are around $110, and I can't justify paying that when I can get a brand new 400 watt HPS for the same if not a little more. So my idea is just to use a ballast kit and go about things the same way. My question is this kit is a "quad-tap" instead of just a 120 volt (https://www.jollygreenhydro.com/onlinestore/product.php?productid=16919&cat=402&page=1). Would this be ok and still work as just 120 volts?

ok so i just finished wiring up my 600w hps ballast. I got mine from high pressure sodium.net. They only have hps but I have seen alot of cheap 400w mh kits. just search mh ballast kits on google and youll find em. For your situation yes that transformer is fine . muti tap just means that you can power the trans. with different voltages and still get the same output. just be sure to use the 120v tap. the other taps are just left disconnected. I screwed my ballast to a pice of ply wood. and hung it on the wall works great. just be sure to leavce an air gap if mounting this way as the transformer gets real hot.

hope this helps!!

Quad-tap means that it can be wired to operate at four different voltages.
120 volt,208, 240 and 277

So definitely it will work on 120 volts.

Just wire it according to the instructions

they have cheaper ones on ebay though.

Do you know about what demensions the ballast, ignitor and capacitor are? i want to use a similar project case but RadioShack doesn't sell the one used in the DIY anymore.
