Ballast, Bulb or Socket

I have a 400 watt HPS electronic ballast that powers up and then shuts off after maybe 10 minutes. It has a reset button on it and I don't know if it's the ballast or not. I switched the bulb. Still does it. I took the bulb out completely and it still shuts off so it must the ballast right? Any suggestions as to what I can do to troubleshoot this. I am no electrical expert. And I am a woman which would explain why I don't want to mess too much with it.

Gotta say.....you've done some awesome troubleshooting already. Leaning towards a ballast problem here....but I would suggest unplugging everything and checking the cords/connections of the cord to the socket/etc. I've seen wires inside of reflector hoods get hot from the lamp itself and then the wire/cord itself gets brittle rather than flexible. When this happens it often leads to "problems". Just a thought.

wish I could think of something else....but these new fangled things heehhee...well...it isn't like the old days when a certain symptom meant >this part or that part< was bad. Now it's like..."WTF?" ;-)

good luck

Could be the ballast but I've had a similar issue with a bad surge protector/power strip and bad extention cords. It sounds like you've isolated the issue though; it's either the ballast or something to do with the delivery of power to the ballast .
If it's not a bad power strip or wiriing replacing a ballast is fairly common. I've gone through a few myself over the years and you surely get what you pay for so don't go too cheap. Shoot for the middle of the road price range if you can.

All good advice..

Also try turning the ballast on it's side and make sure it's on a stable surface. They have all kinds of safety features built in so it can be tricky...

Thanks. I actually left the ballast pulled in no bulb so it was running. When I went back down stairs it was still going. Leads me to think that it's the socket. I put the MH bulb back in and put the switch to 50%. Was still running a couple of hours later. Just moved it to 75 and I will know tomorrow if it stayed running when I check the ballast to see if it tripped. I have been having issue upon issue. Plants outside are small because we've had NOTHING BUT RAIN all summer anyone in Ontario will have to beware of Rot. Clones haven't rooted in months due to mold and damping off or something.

The cord was hot to the extension cord. So I moved it. Still did it.

Ok I will try that. It's currently laying flat and inside the tent. Maybe it's running hot in there.

Yea, I had to ly mine on its side, on a piece of plywood outside the tent.. It also didn't really like MH bulbs too much.
When it shuts off let it sit unplugged for a while then hit reset. Don't keep trying to fire it. Perhaps though you just need to replace it.

Seems to be working ok now. With the MH bulb but will try the HPS and see what happens. Also the ballast has a switch that you set from 10-110% power. I had it on 110. Maybe too much?
