Bad Ballast? Help...

In anticipation of my first grow, I bought a Lumatek 600 watt digital ballast. It's switchable between MH and HPS bulbs, and the wattage is selectable via a switch. Which is good, because I want to use a 400 watt MH for vegging, and a 600 watt HPS for flowering.

However, as I've been doing research on which bulbs to buy, I've seen several complaints about higher wattage digital ballasts, which include blowing bulbs prematurely.

So, did I buy a bad ballast? Should I sell it on ebay?

Thanks

u can blow a bulb if you touch it and leave your greasy fingerprints on it, so grab a towel if u gonna touch the glass end before u stick it in

I have the Lumatech 600/400 switchable and love it so far, although I've only been running for 2 weeks. The noise from the fans reminds me of a first gen PS3, no buzzing or humming like magnetic ballasts. I also like the fact that the Lumatek has fans, whereas the cheap ones on eBay say the 400w ones don't have fans b/c they don't put out too much heat. Anyway, I was under the assumption that the problems people were having were with the 1000w ballasts, as there is more heat and power draw going on. I'm pretty confident in this ballast - I bought it from Discount Hydroponics, and they have a great return policy - seems like they wouldn't be pushing them so hard if they were having any major problems with them.

As far as bulbs, mine came standard with a pretty generic looking 400w, which seems to be working fine. I've seen that they make bulbs that are specifically designed for the digital ballasts, but they run like $100, so I stick with my generic one for now.
