Ok, so I have gone with the same method to germinate for awhile now, and it just seems to slow. Looking for a faster way. My current method is to put my seeds in a glass of water for 24hrs and cover it it up, take it out of the water put it in moist paper towel then cove it with a plate, place heating pad under it and check it out for like two days where i will see a good tap root showing. From there they go in rapid rooters that are moist in a tray, with water on the bottom of the tray, lid put on top of tray, on top of lid is one single t-5 with mylar covering it. I also have a heating pad on bottom of tray. Of late im not getting the seedling to show as good as before, and Im not getting optimal results. what am i doing wrong? what should i cut out? what can i do to improve on my results.

Immature or old seeds not preserved correctly? Good healthy seeds will pop in 24hrs no probs...sometimes a few late bloomers, but hey what can you do...I use the shotglass of water method as well...the key to that is once it stops floating it Absorbed the water it needs to germinate...then you can transfer to your moist paper towel + plate...you can also just leave the seed in the cup of water until the tap root pops out...i've done that as well :)

How does this compare to a seed just popped into soil?

every grower has their own method...some pop it straight in soil...some use water in a cup...some use paper towels only...honestly the only thing I can suggest is to try them all out to find the one that works for you and the seeds you are using :)

My opinion is that the germinating seeds get too much handling by your technique. As I understand it, the developing taproot is extremely delicate. It is covered with microscopic hairs that are easily damaged.

I was taught to start with water or paper towel and plant it in whatever as soon as the taproot emerges. Which usualy means within six hours.

Other thoughts are:

Check the ph on your water. Seeds like it a bit acidic.

Sterilize everything and use distilled water. The less effort the seed has to make to fend off fungus and bacteria the more it can spend on growing.

Use a drop of superthrive.

I found that popping beans straight in soil works best for me. I used to do the pape rtowel method and lost many seeds to non germination. Since switching to planting them in soil I have a 100% germination rate. But like Massah says, you've got to keep trying till you find what works for you.
