b00z00's Ghetto Garbage Can Growbox

Hey ya'll!

I've never grown before and seems how I started this past week, I entered in Abiqua's '1st Unofficial Party Cup Grow Off'. I just germ's under a desk lamp for about a week or so, and now it's getting about time to build my box.

WELL, earlier this week my car's trans broke, so money's funny right now. So I took 50$ (45.52 was the final total lol) and went to Lowe's.

Here is what I have so far:
Terminal adapters and clip in light fixtures super glued then duct tapes together
IMAG0257.jpg
Spliced wires together with an extension cord
IMAG0260.jpg
Just a regular old garbage can minding its own business...
IMAG0258.jpg
Opened that bitch up!! I used weather strip around the edge, half way hanging off the inside edge so the part I cut out will seal.
IMAG0261.jpg
Light-proofing was a pain so I had to make some belts out of string and cut notches in the corners for each one so it wont slide up and it goes right to where I want it. I picked up velcro at the store but somehow it disappeared before I got to the register and I just forgot about it til I started building. I'll probably still get some.
IMAG0263.jpg
Took a small screwdriver and poked a hole in the top-middle for a paper clip for the lights to hang from so I can move them. Took a bigger screwdriver and made a hole just big enough to squeeze the cord in.
IMAG0264.jpgIMAG0265.jpg
Duct tape to seal light and hold paper clip in.
IMAG0266.jpg
In all her glory!
IMAG0267.jpg

I still need to put some mylar on the inside of the box, as it is translucent. I will also be adding PC fans, possibly a switch, and a bottom later this week. Other than that I think it turned out pretty well (/ugly), and for 50$ I won't complain.:hump:

What do you guys think?:joint:

It's going to get really hot in there, even if you use some computer fans. Watch for the plastic to get soft too. Not a lot of growing room but I suppose you could grow a single autoflower in it. Seems like a lot of energy for just one plant.

This depends on the spec's of the fans I decide to install, does it not? I'll run a test for a few hours to see how it does just without the fans. The contest is a stealth/micro grow-off, so that's why I kept it compact. The plant has to stay in a party cup for the duration of the grow :p Also not much energy involved! It was a laid back Sunday, so i figured I had couple hours to spare! Thanks for input!

Reminds me of Trailer Park Boys... lol
I did consider growing in my back seat!!

That setup worries me tbth. Fire hazard for starters. I can imagine that plastic getting really soft fromvtge heat too.

But I tend to be overly paranoid.

with good exhaust fans and maybe keeping it near a cool air source for intake you could be good there... probably wont be able to put too many bulbs though... and that I would most definitely wrap some electrical tape around those wire-nuts for security. you don't want to break any bulbs in an area that small. your plants will definitely not like mercury poisoning.

That was my first thought too, I'll probably just end up using two bulbs to keep the heat down, but I'll wait to see how my tests go. She's not growing in there yet, so I still have some time to tinker before I move her in.

Right on! Like I said, I may just end up using two but we will see.Electrical tape is a for sure thing, I had some and evidently lost it so I will be fixing that little hazard today  I thought mercury increased bud density anyway???:spew:

She should yield about 6lbs each grow.
Looking forward to it ;)

Honestly, it would be ok if I only got 6g off it. I didn't expect much more anyway, I just like to experiment with my resourcefulness.

Happy toking!:joint:

After 1 hour with 2 100w flowering bulbs it's at 85.6 degrees..without any fans. Seems promising but we will see what difference the liner makes. Also, My room is at 74 degrees right now which is a little warmer than I usually keep it anyway.

Haha no worries, just cracking harmless jokes - I'm growing in a box myself.

Your temps seem fine with lights running, and that's with no fans. All signs would point to YES, you can grow weed! I would check the temps again after having the lights running for at least 12 hours though.

Right on! The lights are still going so I will post a 6 and 12 hour update.

I seriously doubt the seriousness of the poster but it was so good I could not pass it up as a sig. :) Best wishes with your grow!

sheeeeeit, 85.5 is awesome with no fans!

slap a small fan facing the plants and 1 or 2 computer fans in the top somewhere. then make an intake somehow, just cut a hole in the trash can or whatever and light proof it. you'll be in the upper 70's with ease!

This is exactly what I planned on doing, so it's good to hear I'm on the right track. One thing I've been thinking about is how to light proof it with the fans. Would some charcoal filter work?

Kudos to all of you!

I am using a cardboard box for mines it's a little shorter than your can and a little bigger around. I had to cut some vents in the top and sides to get heat down. I light proof by throwing a blanket over top, which makes it hotter but since I cut the vents the flaps keep the blanket high enough to where it's not too hot. But then again, I only have to light proof for 12 hours. I got no fan yet but I keep it next to my wall which is under a window and it's really cold here so it keeps temps down. Good luck in the solo cup contest. Which were you in the 4th official or 1st unofficial? I was in both running dwc for 4th official and a kandy kush x dwc for the 1st unofficial one

I'm just in the 1st Unofficial. I was gonna start a grow log on my first shot at it and saw that so I figured I'd just join that and use it as my personal log (to an extent). I'm liking the kandy kush it looks good so far, I've always sought that strain out but haven't been able to find it. How much did you yield in your box the first run?

Yea.. it does, but...
... Didn't Ricky use the big recycling bins for his grow, though?
Yes and who knows, maybe I'll upgrade!

Also forgot to mention, after 6 hours the box was still at 85.6, 71 in my room. I didn't get to do a 12 hour check because I had to leave later that day and was going to be gone for a couple days so I cut it off. I think the temp should remain stable though, I'm going to try it with 3 bulbs and a couple fans when I get back and she how it does.

Question: Is there any benefit to running a veg bulb with 2 flower bulbs at the same time for a 12-12 from seed grow? Or should I just keep it all flower bulbs?
