Hi, I was wondering whats the general consensus on autoflowering plants.
Should I bother? If so, what strain? Is there a big difference between normal weed and auto-weed?
Pros? Cons? So on, so on.

yes/no

Pro's
Autos are plug and play, not much to worry about in terms of light leaks or hours of light/dark...start in the final pot and watch them grow
Autos are great for outdoor grows, especially if you have limited summer months

Con's
May produces smaller yields and lower quality...but this could be disputed upon
Some breeders have produced decent strains, others are crap

Apart from the occasional freebies, I wont do autos again. I like to tinker around with them during veg, topping, cropping and training, just cant do that with autos. Also, if you get a pheno you really like, tough shit, you cannot make a clone.

Many advancements have been made and are still being made, the answer to this question really relies on your experience as a grower, no experience in this case, .. less to go wrong, no timers or dark to worry about, and no expensive nutes to keep feeding them either, plug and play is the best way to describe them ...Yeah!
Sure they can be cloned...but why would you, having just turned that femmed plant now you breed from it ..easy
to the last 3 years running low ryder 1-2 has been the plant of the year,
in all countries east of Paris, but only cause of the heavy selling the Dutch are doing there ...lol

ensure you have the space and the gear for photo growing

What I like about autos is that you can grow seedlings, veg and flower alongside each other. What you learn from one can be applied to the others (at earlier stages of growth). You don't wait for the entire crop to finish, to see how a change works.

The downside is that you have to run your lights 6 hours longer than photosensitives. More wear and tear on your lights, electric costs, cooling/extraction costs.

I ran my autos side by side as you said in veg....I then throw them in the same room as my feminized and flip them to 12/12. Nothing has gone wrong yet. I've been doing this with several strains that is have produce seeds from. Mazar, pineapple, magnum & wipe out.

I didn't mean to imply they can't be run 12/12. From what I've read, the general consensus is that 12/12 yields less, and most run 18/6. Some 20/4 or 24/0. I was just giving an example of what appears to be the most common practice.

Running 12/12 makes the plant more comparable to a photosensitive. But, if yield is reduced, that would also support critics who say autos yield less. I think we pay for larger yield by paying for 6 additional hours (and then say "they yield just as well.").

I wonder if anyone's compared cost/yield between 12/12 and 18/6. It would be interesting to know if it's worth the extra 6 hours.

You say that it depends on the strain and the quality of the seeds, what strain would you recommend and why?

Everybody is spot on when it comes to running autos alsongside photos for convenience, but the right autos can be up to par with photos. I've had a long run with autos and let me tell you the best strains in my experience for yield and potency are Dutch passion Think Different, Blue Auto Mazar, Ak48 Auto, and Narcotic Kush auto. All those are good in yeild, taste and potency.

I'll run them if I have them, wont go out of my way to order them though.

You can so some topping an LST if you do it early but less is more with autos.
