Attempting my first grow, will my lighting work out?

Hello all, I've been reading through the forums a lot over the past weeks trying to get everything in order for my first attempt at producing some fine smoke for myself.

I've decided I will try to grow 3 plants at the same time for my first try. I've ordered some Northern Lights seeds, after germinating them I plan on planting them directly into 5 gallon buckets of FoxFarm soil.

My biggest question involves lighting and heat. For the 3 plants, I've ordered six 43W CFL's (6500k) and one single 4ft 54W fluorescent (6500k). I plan on using the 4ft fluorescent across the tops of all three, and 2 CFLs on opposite sides of each individual plant.

I've ordered six replacement CFL's for the flowering stage, 2700k bulbs. I was planning on NOT changing the high single fluorescent, as I read that its good during the flowering stage to still have some of the higher frequency bulbs around to promote growth.

SO- Is that enough light for 3 Northern Lights plants? Or is it too much, or are there any errors in this plan up until this point?

Also, I'm a bit worried that the area I'm growing in might not be cool enough. I'll be growing in an extra bedroom, the closet to be specific. This bedroom has windows but can not have an air conditioning unit installed in those windows. Where I live, the summers get pretty hot and humid. I was planning on keeping windows open periodically and keeping a large fan blowing at all times, would this be enough to counter those few 90º+ days I experience?

Thanks a bunch. This is an excellent forum, I've learned an insane amount of information just from here over the past few weeks, and I'll be coming here for all my questions if ya dont mind :P

Howdy there! The lighting u've specified will work, but only to a point. As the plants grow, and believe me, they'll grow:hump:, the will eventually outgrow those lights. UNLESS, u keep em short. But also, if u start 3 plants, and only 1 or 2 end up being females, that'll give u some extra lights for em since u won't want the males. Temps probly won't be much of an issue with just the 6cfls anthe 1 fluro. They'll get warm, but not too bad, nothin ur fan shouldn't be able to handle. Once flowering time comes, be ready for them to at least double in size in a hurry, so don't run out of space.

A decent size fan will alleviate any heat issues you should encounter. Cfl's are great because they don't output obscene amounts of heat. However as Rich has stated you may want to invest in a HPS/MH setup. A 250 watt switchable ballast would be an excellent start for a beginner such as yourself. Also invest in some odor control if you havnt already.

Excellent, thanks for the advice guys.

I guess I have two follow up questions then-

If I plan on staying with the CFLs, should I try getting another 56W fluorescent for across all 3 plants, or should I get more CFLs per individual plant?

I've also decided I will be building my setup in a reflective booth (mylar)to help make my bulbs more efficient. Will this alleviate my need for more lighting?

Once again, gracias

I'd probly get more cfl's PLUS the other fluro. with the cfl's u can move which light u want to where it's needed pretty easy so they got an advantage there if it's between one or the other imo. The more light the merrier, especially during flowering. The mylar willl do just as u said, help get the most out of the lights u got, but it's not going to eliminate the need for more lighting down the road.

Alright, Well I'm adding a 2nd 4ft Fluorescent for sure, and if all 3 plants end up as females, I'll definitely add some more CFL's.

Well thats it for lighting and set up questions, you'll be hearing from me in a few weeks as my first sprouts break ground.

Thanks again!

.... if u got a little bit of $ for lighting, a switchable HPS setup like snyder was sayin, would eliminate the need for the cfls and the fluros altogether, then ur left with heat to control. Sometimes it comes down to money, sometimes it comes down to how 'in-to' the grow u wanna get.

Thanks Rich

After this grow is complete, I'll definitely look into a HPS light. It sounds like a much easier set up than multiple CFLs.

I went the CFL route thinking that it would be cheaper, but I'm really not sure it was after all :P

CFL's are most definitely cheaper. But at the same time you get what you pay for.

If it was me and you plan on keeping your grow relatively small, I would invest in a "switchable" ballast. A switchable ballast allows for either an MH or HPS bulb to be used at any given time.

Examples are as follows :

250 Watt Pulsar System :

400 Watt Pulsar System :

These are self contained system composing of a ballast and hood combined into 1 space saving design referred to as one piece mini-systems.

I kinda thought the same thiong at first.... but when u compare what it costs to run enough cfl's to equal, say a 400w. HPS, it's about the same. I had a sweet 400 watter from htg for the last couple grows, air-cooled hood, digital remote ballast, sweet. it ran me and a buddy about $200 or $250.... It works out with the HIDs cuz when u try to match 50,000+ lumens with cfls, the heat, power bill, AND overall cost of running the light are about the same. HIDs are a lot less pain in the arse, raise em, lower em, thats it. No rigging multible bullbs over and over throughout the grow, nice and simple:hump:
