Looking great for your third grow man. I wouldn't trim any more than that. There's no set rule about how many nodes there should be or anything when you flower.
However, I read before that a good rule of thumb when taking fresh cuttings from a plant is not to take off more than a third of the node on the plant if you want to avoid stress. I would probably apply this to lollipopping before your flip as well, as you don't want to cause the plants stress right before flipping them to 12 12. I was just talking to a guy actually that got some male flowers on a few lower branches from doing a lot of trimming down there.
Just curious as to how your buddy came to the conclusion that the herm was directly attributed to "too much lolipopping"?
