Are my lights suitable?

Hi guys, I've decided to fit out a room with some equipment to start growing, and I realised I had some old 500W halogen lamps. I know these are incandescent so they produce a lot of heat, but would it be too much? And how much would it impact the power usage, in comparison to a PC for example?

That won't work, depending on how much space you got go with a HPS or MH light. And as far as I know 500w computer = 500w light.

i most assuredly agree, find a light that has an adjustable ballast and get a metal halide and a high pressure sodium bulb and take that route for best results. Check out the growfaq for more info on lights

I don't think I have that kind of budget at the moment, however, compact fluorescents look promising, at present I only have an 8W one, but I'll certainly look for a 27W. I don't know however, how to supply power to the light without plugging it inti a ceiling socket.

When your vegging your plants, you really don't need much light at all.
A couple of shop lights with 40 watt fluorescents are sufficient for seedlings, vegging, mothers, and clones.
When your vegging with fluorescents your plants will grow no problem. You just have to keep the bulbs extremely close to the tops of your plants. Your plants will become tall and lanky. But with some careful pruning and training you can train your plants to becoming more bushy.

It will be a 2-3 months anyways before your plants will be even ready to
put into flowering status to produce bud.
During the vegging stage, caring for your plants will give you the experience that you will need for the flowering stage. Plus it will give you some time to save your money to get a powerful enough light to produce bud.
You will not produce bud with 40 watt flourescents. You might get the beginning stages of bud. But the flowers will never evolve into something that will have a significant amount of THC.
You'll need something a bit stronger. At least a 400 watt HPS (High Pressure Sodium) Bulb. If you shop around you can find a decent light setup for less than $200 including the bulb.

Becareful when buying these lights. People out there will try and sell you a setup with a HPS bulb, Where the bulb will technically will be a HPS bulb. But the bulb will be a shitty HPS street bulb that you can buy at any HD for $15. This bulb is made for street lights not for plants.
You need a bulb that has a high lumen output, at least 55,000 lumens. Also it's very important that it has at least a 30% blue & red spectrum.
These HPS bulbs that are made for plants, generally sell for about $75.

Good Luck.
