Hey I havent been part of the growing community for about 10 years. Back when i was Autos were widley frowned apon due to its inherrent weak (ruderails) genetics.

I'm just wondering has much changed in the past decade? Are the genetics still trash or has selective breeding helped autos get to a point where it could be compared to or even close to traditional flower.

Thanks

Oh yes! The game has changed! Most autos now are in the same range as their photo counterparts in flavor, and potency. Obviously the yields would be less as they have their own cycle but I’ve grown autos for about 5 yrs now and no one can tell the difference. I would keep them indoors in a controlled environment but will do good OD as well. I am consistently getting 3-4 oz per auto and that’s in soil. In hydro, that number could double. I’ve seen 6-8 and sometimes 14 oz on larger autos.F7AC8FC8-B3B1-4367-9C45-11ADFE5C1DAB.jpeg148FFB69-4D59-41FA-9D79-1FD53927CE31.jpeg That one yielded 190g dry.36119BD2-8051-44D0-8700-2A9BC92520C0.jpeg74FB4A30-101D-4FA6-9FA3-4796FD529DE4.jpeg
These two are same cultivar, two different phenos at 4.2 oz and 3.7oz dry… they have come along way in 10 yrs! First pics are custom breeder strain. I would have to go into my records to find the strains crossed. And last two pics are Lil MobStar’s Dream from beavergenetics. Lil Mobstar x Sorbet Dream

The two bottom pics were topped plants. The first pics are of one plant, not topped. If I’d topped that one would’ve prob got 230-250g!

Autos are ok. Potency and all that is comparable to photos nowadays.

There's some valid reasons to grow autos like you need something fast outdoors, or you won't be able to provide 12 hours of complete darkness.

But if you're looking to try specific genetics out, and don't have to grow autos, then just get photos. There's more options and better options with photos.

I like to grow autos because I hate the photo hassle of having to veg a plant to adult hood. Then having to flower it for 8 - 20 weeks, or train a clone for 3 months all this so that the photo produces well.
I especially dislike waiting 4-6 mounts for my bud to cure into something that barely makes decent smoke. Meh mids is real with photos.
Besides, having to wait 10 months to produce photo bud while knowing they I can produce the same quality and amount of bud in 2 months makes growing autos la no brainer in my opinion.
But to each his her own.

Absolutely.

Let's say it's cold where you live; you can run autos with more light to create more warmth.

Let's say your tent has light leaks & you can't get your lung room dark, or your grow tent is in a room that always has a light on. .. autos won't be affected by any of that.

Let's say you just wana "set it & forget it" and have weed in 3 months. . .. autos are the way to go.

How many times did you top?
Twice. They started preflower at day 35 and were harvested 78 with about 10% amber. Topped at day 12 and 24. Just tied main branches out and let it fill in. Easy grower with little problems. You can’t always top twice. All depends on cultivar. Any XL or XXL will run longer than standard autos. Longest auto grown was 100 days. Shortest was 65. I grow photos as well. Indoor and outdoor. Got two Ethos Mandarin Zkittlez seedlings I am growing for clones and flower. Plan on topping twice and using tops for clones. Gonna fill the tent with them before flowering and save some for OD season.

Yea I’d say if treated right they’d do great by you. Lot of work breeders have done over the years to get some pretty solid, consistent genetics. I’m currently abusing some autos right now and they’re moving along..
Last time I got ~12 zips on 150 watts on 4 of them in a 3x3
nice. I pretty much stick with known breeders. Seedstockers is good. Super sativa seed club if you can get them. Most of what MVB have I would grow.
