The Remington R-15 450 Bushmaster should pack enough of a wallop to satisfy even the most hardened home invader. Drop a deer in one shot with a factory 4 round clip; with a rapid fire rate... this thing can't be beat.

Not if it's a .223. Don't fall for the propaganda. The Tao of deer (and any large game) hunting is one well-placed shot. And I would not care to try it with "not enough gun". Do you know what load you'd use in that for deer? Suitable (in .223, that means marginal as opposed to wholly inappropriate) loadings are not at all common, and that gun might have the wrong leade and twist rate for those. cn

.308 is good but a bit heavy. I'd seriously go with something in a .25 or 6.5mm, from a bolt gun.

But if the choice is too light v. too heavy, and I didn't have to pack the damned talkstick 50 miles each way, I'd definitely choose heavy. cn

It depends on what you mean by "versatile". I'm trying to steer you away from rounds that will tempt you into a military-style gun. So far, you've only mentioned battle rifle rounds. If I were hunting game, I'd MUCH rather have a bolt gun with a good scope and a load that returns me half-minute behind a bullet designed for game. The alternative, more often than not, is a semi-auto that'll struggle to print two-minute groups and has mostly "match" or "FMJ" ammo available for it, which is soldier gun chow. (And it'll throw your brass into your bud's face, and semi-autos are heavy for what they shoot. And bolt guns are as close to failsafe as ballistic technology has given us!)

Now truly, the ultimate in versatility is a 12-gauge pump gun with interchangeable barrels and chokes. I'd have three: the 18-inch riot gun barrel, the longer slug tube, and a long 28" or 30" tube with an interchangeable choke for fowl andor clay use. After all, the fun is in the firing. cn

Hell I hunt deer with my .357 revolver. Can't use high powered rifles in my state for deer so I use the pistol. Or a muzzle loader. 50 cal.

You might try a Saiga rifle, It's based of an AK but comes in other calibers besides 7.62x39.

My problem (and a quality that women praise) is that I'm a lousy stalker. I'd use a .357 with my loads in a hot heartbeat ... but I'd have to get within easy bowhunting range of my quarry. My gun of choice would be my Freedom Model 83 (then sold as the 353) with a 7 1/2-inch barrel. I have sent 180s out the noisy end at a verified 1800fps. And what those did to 2-liter soda bottles full of water! cn

i use to have a benelli nova pump but i gave it to my buddy.
cann. ypu do have a point about the mil-style semi aytos im getting influenced by a infantry srgeant on the guns lol
ima have to check out some bolt action semis

I shoot a .223 with 55g soft points for hunting and dropped a deer with a shoulder/lung shot and it ran five feet and dropped dead. Not to mention when i cleaned the deer, the lung was liquid. Nothing wrong with hunting with a .223 if you are accurate. But as for the ops original question, I would go with the ar. You can use two different rounds in those.
