Apartment Wiring

I live in a BRAND NEW apartment. And my Grow room/Bedroom breaker also powers the Hall, one bathrrom and part of the kitchen. That Electrician was smoking some good shit that day. My Second bathroom I never use so that is no big deal. But I have to be careful what small appliances I turn on in the kitchen together. I have not blown the breaker in the last two grows though.

L2D, I use Digital Timers. They work great. What are you wondering about them?

the black is the ground, and the white is positive (if it was wired correctly) The exposed one is usually a neutral wire.

Any word on these digital timers fdd? Know anything about them?
Been doing wiring south of the border or something? In America, black is ALWAYS hot on AC and common on DC. I won't go into the rest of it.

Bud, you are in over your head on this idea.

I have a Dedicated Breaker to my grow room (closet) I use a junction box and run the power using a heavy duty extinction cord from the AC outlet . On the outlet I have a 30 amp breaker I did all the wiring with the guidance of a experienced person. I use dimmers to control the fan speed also controlling the temp. the setup is sweet and was cheep doing it my self of yopu have any questions I'll be happy to answer as best I cam.

Out of curiosity, are you using that timer to its full capabilities? Or just because its digital? I use one like that on my fish tank to control different lights at different times. But just curious about the way you are using it.

Never mind just looked again, I see your not using the switched outlets.

when a house is advertised with 200 amp service....does that mean i dont have to do any upgrading?
200 amps for a house that is 2000 square feet or smaller should be plenty of capacity, even if it is an all electric home. The problem is always distribution of power from the panel and balancing the load on the varios circuits.

this thread is scary.

I am an electricain by trade and, yes, much of this is scary sounding. Sometimes we all need to learn the hard way. I have been trying to figure out a good FAQ section to write on AC theory and application. Maybe I will get my ass moving on it.... Tommorow:mrgreen:

Before you burn the place down buy some fire insurance!!!!:fire::wall::fire::wall::fire::wall::fire::dunce::lol:
Before you burn the place down, buy fire insurance.

120 volts X 10 amperes = 1200 watts

2 (1000w lights) / 120 volts = 16.66 amps, + ballast draw of 1 amp + misc. stuff = about 20 amps.

Apartment bedroom circuits are 15 amps.

You might pull this off if you use two different hot wires and different neutral wires.

Short answer, GET SOME HELP!!!!

Seriously, please for you own safety. Get some professional help.

OK, I normally would mind my own business but I have to do this:

This is an apartment, i.e. shared building, i.e. you cannot run 2000 watts continuous improper wiring or you are going to end up with homicide charges when you burn some poor family upstairs to ashes...

I had huge trouble getting just 800 watts running right on its own 30 amp breaker - the inductive field from two 400w *digital* ballasts was enough to melt, yes, melt one the two main 120v lines between the main panel and the meter. While everything is resolved now, I cannot stress how dangerous of a situation this was (blue arcing, electric smell/noise).

So with that known, what are you going to say if you cause damage to the buildings main wiring? Especially if you are going to hack the wiring in your apartment? I hope the main wiring at this building was just installed with no defects because if there are any you will expose them.

This is an apartment, are you 100% sure there will never be an inspection? When I used to live, in addition to routine maintenance checks, there was something called pest control quarterly. Needless to say, I did not grow there.

You cannot claim fire insurance when the investigation reveals an illegal grow op.

This is the worst idea ever, no electrician is going to come and do work without the permission of the building owner, and what are you planning to tell them? So that leaves you with the ghetto hack option as you cannot even drill into the walls... So what, are you planning to have a cord running 2000 watts down your hallway?

Please, please save up a down payment and get your own property...

You're correct but 200 amps is for the entire house and if it's 2 floors it is spread out ass needed. I don't know the min code for your state but were i'm from there has to be a dedicated line for an air conditioner. What I did was was check the gage of wiring from the box to the AC outlet, once I made sure It could hold a 30 amp breaker safely I switched it with a 30amp replacing the 20amp. To off set the amp's allowed to the box I also replaced a 30 amp breaker with a 20amp for the lights in the bed rooms I hardly use the outlets in my bed rooms. As a safety measure in between my Grow room and the box I installed another box with a 25amp breaker this way that swatch is thrown before my main box is. READ CAREFULLY AN OUTLET IN A GROW ROOM SHOULD (MUST) BE A GFI NEVER USE A REGULAR OUTLET.also only use a power strip that has a GFI in it. Be sure to ground EVERYTHING.
