Anyone have an opinion on best soil to buy?

Save a bunch of cash & make your own soil.

Potting soil 40%.

Top soil 30%.

Perlite 20%.

Masons sand 10%.

This mix comes out light & fluffy with kick ass drainage,the masons sand adds serious drainage without alot of volume,the top soil contains enough nute's to carry you a long way through veg without adding anything & has enough micro nute's to go the full grow.

Well, those spoiled Cali guys will tell you that without soil (and nutes) from some obscure company that only sells in Cali you are doomed.
But true is MG is as good as any good soil. And is much less expensive.

cali rules. we would have the 5th largest economy in the world if we were our own country. but why not have a little protection from the most powerful military in the world.

and you get to "elite" status by paying membership fees.

we have Kellogg's nurseries out here. cheap and helpful.

Foxfarm Ocean Forest is talked about an awful lot on here, that's all I can vouch for though.

Yeah dude. After trying dozens of other potting soils over the years I agree that da best is Edna's Best. Whitney Farms and Dr. Earth are semi-decent alternatives, but don't compare. This stuff smells great and holds up like nothing I ever tried before. Great moisture retention and lots of nutrients. Don't be surprised if mushrooms pop up. (But don't smoke 'em.)

And stay away from readily available commercial brands like Kellogs. They even abuse the term "organic" because there's no regulation. At least not in Cali, that is. And they use sewage sludge disguised under various names. You want that shit in your lungs? Not me, baby!

Lemme put it this way: check the ingredients of the soil carefully. It's a very bad sign if there's no detailed list of ingredients. The main ingredients should include composted forest products, chicken manure and/or bat guano, beneficial microbes, etc. There should be nothing ambiguous like on the big commercial ones. Compare them. Very enlightening.
