Any true plug & play Mini Split besides Excel Air? Mini Split questions in general...

Looking at my AC options.

I just picked up a Soleus LX-140 portable dual hose last night (rush purchase since they are discontinued @ nearing end of the season for stores carrying them).

The guy at the store mentioned it was a 100 day+ deal for them to arrive from overseas and that they were discontinued. So I rushed off to another of their locations that had a couple in stock and snagged one. It's sitting here in the box until I can decide.

I know that the portables have some leakage issue, but I'll be venting mine into the house so the odor & winter concerns don't necessarily apply. I would have liked to vent to the attic but I'm concerned with moisture/condensation... As well I know the portables aren't as efficient (lower SEER rating primarily?).

So, I've dropped arond $550 so far and I can afford more if needed, but I don't want to throw cash around stupidly. I found a mini-split from Soleus online for around $770 or so but I know I'll be incurring more costs such as Electrical run for a 220v circuit $$$.... The HVAC tech needed to install and charge the lines since I'm pretty certain I'll need at least 1 extra line set so you've got labor $$$, refrigerant $$$ and the extra line set $$$

So what are my real options here folks? Shell out around $1500 most likely to get the mini-split going...

In my current situation I have a space with a dedicated 20a circuit to the room, but that was for my lighting and fans, misc... Being that the portable calls for 12.5a or so... I need a dedicated 15a most likely in addition.... So I've got a little electrical cost there to run a new circuit - which I would likely pay someone licensed to do (in case the house burns down you don't want them to invalidate your claim due to a DIY electrical run I assume). I think that's roughly $120-$160 for labor plus another $100 or so for the wire/breaker/outlet supplies.

And with requiring the HVAC tech there goes some of the 'stealth' of the install...

Those Excel Air are supposed to have the pre-charged "plug & play" lines but my God are they ever expensive.... For same SEER/BTU unit it seems like they are considerably more money. I'm assuming that's purely because of their plug & play feature - otherwise I'm assuming they're the same as any Ideal Air, LG, Mitsubishi, Soleus unit...

Also any reccomendations on online vendors for mini-splits? There's tons of 'em - any first hand experiences? Oh and my space isn't very big... 6x10 or so... And lighting is - for now - just 2 units of T5 lights... 8-buld Quantum BadBoys... 5a each @ 110v... So factor in air/water pumps and a 8" fan for the air scrubber...

Another related question... I've seen the LX-140 online with shipping for less than I paid @ my brick & mortar. Considering returning it and just waiting for a delivered one. I'm just at the point of planning for now.

Any reccomendsations on online vendors? I see on Amazon I can get it for about $450 with shipping included. Assuming no sales tax (which I had @ brick & mortar) that's about $100 less than I shelled out.

So theirs are TRUE plug & play.. No HVAC tech, no line-charging needed? Even if adding additional footage / line sets?
not sure if you add additional line distance but they are plug and play (pre-charged). there a quite a few other companies that sell pre-charged ac units. i just can't remember them all.

Gotcha. Would like to keep it self/DIY and not involve a HVAC tech. Though I still have to deal with the electrical install issues... I'm not scared of being in the panel and running line...

I'm scared of insurance companies looking for ways to wiggle out of paying and blaming anything they can on the homeowner! ;-)

if you end up getting an electrician in there most of them can hook up a minisplit anyway.

Need to find the "mj friendly" equivalent of Angie's List... ;-)

Find a HVAC/Electrical source that can keep their mouths shut!

You CANNOT add additional lines to Ideal Air without adding extra refrigerant!!! Talked to them myself!! Bummed me out cause I need like five more feet than the lines that come with it:(

Yeah I saw on one site I was checking out the unit is precharged for 25ft of line... anything over needed extra refrig at something like 0.3/oz per ft.

Oh that sucks... it's copper... just steeeeeetch it a bit... ;-)

Too bad that won't work! What did you go with instead? Or did you shell out the $$ for another line set & refrigerant?

Starting to consdier that water cooling option... Just add more piping/tubing and water... I just checked and a mid-sized chiller can be had around $400 - just have the cost of line/insulation and a radiator like the ice box... might be able to use something else DIY instead of the actual icebox (i.e. radiator core? something like a wort chiller?) I already have a 6" or 8" fan/filter combo... forget which I bought...

Still using the window unit, going to expand into a different room and go from 4000 to 6000 w, that is why I was researching! The one thing you can do with the Ideal Air outside unit is to mount it to the side of the building, which is most llikely what I will do!

Man is it tempting to investigate further into this one:

http://www.ajmadison.com/cgi-bin/ajmadison/KFHHP12.html

I don't see myself ever going over let's say 2 x 1000w even if I did go the HID road.. in a little 6x10 space I think that'd cover it... I still have the extra lines/refrigerant to factor in, but if the whole deal could be done < $1000 I'm thinking it's something I should consider...

Need to find the SEER rating for this portable... I know they don't compare but I wonder what the "gap" is... Sounds like it might pay off i the long-run (say 1-2 years of operation for the sake of the math) to get the higher efficiency and just spend the $$$

Another thing to consider is the thermastat! Ideal Air has a programable one for different temps at different times, most others do not!
