Yeah but if I have a tear I don't want it to tear anymore so I want to keep the vessels frozen so they compress right?
Nooooooooooooo!! You only use ice to reduce swelling by reducing the blood flow. Heat is used to increase blood flow and increase circulation. The more blood flow, the faster you heal. It takes muscles a very, very long time to heal. I've screwed myself out of a gym membership twice by overdoing it.

Right so the last 4 weeks have been a waste awesome :)
Now to start again with heat I guess.

I've worked out too hard to the point that I couldn't even lift a gallon of milk out of the fridge or put on my seat belt the entire day after. It sucks.

That isn't because you worked out too hard it's because you didn't have enough protein in your diet. I get too that point every workout (well every bicep workout) but if you have a good diet with high protein amount (At least 1 gram per lean pound of body weight) then you should be fine the next day.

there's your problem, you're pushing your body too hard. there's a difference between pushing your limits, but you seem like the type that devastates their body everytime they excercise

which is fine, but you sound like one of those meat heads who run their muscles into the ground by over doing it. No offense

Nah that's ok. I tend to only over do things that I think are minimal so I start doing them more then I should because I don't think I do them enough such as stretching.

Yo dude glad to hear you're a kickboxer, what do you train? Its already been said but stop with the cold, the heat will help a lot. Hot steamy showers, steam rooms, and saunas are the best places. I train muay Thai and pulled my right hamstring and it took like 2 months to get back to normal with good care and nutrition. I'm pretty fucked up now but ya good luck man you trying to be a fighter as a career or for fun?

I have walked to my car after working out, thinking that I could be successfully mugged by a 10 year old girl scout, LOL. I used Shawn Phillips system; the bastard is the Antichrist!!!

I trained in kickboxing under David "the cobra" Barber, WKA super bantamweight world champion. He was a total douche bag of a person character wise but was one of the most bad ass guys you'd ever meet. David trained in muay Thai and his forearms were so hard that I got bruises on mine from him blocking my punches. He had someone break a broomstick over his shin one night; no pain whatsoever. He could stand 6" from your face and kick you in the head before you even saw it coming. He stood against the wall one night and had us touch the wall behind him with his toes; then he kicked a ceiling tile out. He is about 5' 3" and the ceiling was standard 8'. I don't know how long he went as champ but he humiliated everyone even close to his weight class; made them look like amateurs. Good luck with your training and healing up!!

Hello,

There are 2 muscles in the calf a large one and a small one. Both have attachment sites at the knee and the heal via the achilles tendon. Either of these muscles can become strained(torn). As always with a strain the R.I.C.E method is essential; Rest, Ice, Compression and elevation. Use a compression bandage on the calf in the inflamed area, you could also add a heal pad in your shoe to elevate during the day to help. If all this fails see your trainer for a connect to a physiotherapist. Best of luck to you in your fights, you should be fine as long as you take a rest period.

Even if you have a tear you want heat. More blood means the faster it will heal. Having no blood going to the area because of constantly icing then it will never heal. Also you should be using compression bandages on the area. The compression itself will also take down the inflammation a bit. And one last thing IF it is a tear, which you would know its a tear because its pretty severe pain then you actually immobilize it. Tears also take very long to heal like sometimes up to a year. But like I said more blood flow=more nutrients/oxygen reaching the injury sight which in turn is a faster healing time.

Another thing it seems like your still pretty active. If you want it to fully heal you need to rest it. For several weeks and if severe enough even several months.

everyone says ice then everyone says heat it makes no sense. Argghh >:( Also no I am only doing upper body weights at the moment so not very active orat least compared too what I was.

Heat is used for treatment of chronic muscle pain to stimulate blood flow to the area and relax/loosed the tissues affected. NEVER EVER use heat after an acute injury or after working out(as well never apply heat when your sleeping). If you are that unsure about treatment you should have it looked at especially if you are on a timeline for your future fight.
