Any Chemistry Majors Here?

So I've decided to change my major from geology to chemistry. Not simply because of drugs, although it was a contributing factor. I'm pretty bright, but looking at the required courses I am now feeling a bit worried. Physical chemistry sounds like hell. Any words of wisdom from past Chemistry majors?

dont worry about it man. chem major here and everything you do is pretty much step by step. organic chem n all that good stuff shouldnt be too bad after undersanding the chem 1 and 2 material. if your into it youll be fine. shoot...i had a 2.6 gpa in hs and have a 3.81 in college haha if your really interested in that kinda stuff go for it and it shouldnt be a prob mann. next step...pharmacology its all about what you wanna spend the rest of your life doing. if you put your mind to it you will truely get it accomplished, no matter how "hard" everyone else says the courses are

Thanks for the reassurance. O chem seems like it will be a breeze , but 6 hour lab for Instrumental Methods F@#&! Are you planning on going to graduate school?

6 hour labs?!? holy shit have fun with that.haha i have 4 hour labs but theyre not bad at all, labs are my favorite actually. n yea grad school for pharmacology. couldve done pharmacy, which is usually only 5 years n make damn good pay, but i like researching how these psychedelics work. its some crazy stuff but theres alot to learn. might as well make a useful contribution to the world while we're still here living right? lol

Haha. Yeah I used to agree with ya there. I think chemistry is going to be more important in the future though. It seems today that a majority of geology careers revolve around the oil industry, which I really want nothing to do with. Making drugs is more appealing to me

Have you talked to any professors about RC's? I too prefer research and learning to money to some extent. Do you/can I expect to have the knowledge to synthesize some of these chemicals by the time you/I graduate? I was at a music festival up here in AK and smoked with these guys from Evergreen college in Washington. They were saying that years ago when they were in school, they actually made 2ce for their individual research something similar. Now that would be rad.

Chemistry was fun and it's not hard as long as you put the hours in studying. O chem is tough but managable if you memorize. I was a chemical engineer until switching to mechanical.

dude, me and you are on completly the same page here. haha but im sure by the time we'll graduate, if we actually remember all of what they taught us, we should be able to synthasize alot. but thats why i wanna also do pharmacology...so i can synthesize even more. haha not to make money off of in the streets, but just to explore. some of the experiences are insane. Ans i feel ya on the music festival part, theyre def thee place to be hahaah i havent talked to any of my professors about that kinda stuff yet. but once i get to grad scholl ill def bring up some new ideas or thoughts to my professors

Everything in life is hard son !
With Chem you can't half ass it !
Shit goes boom ... if you screw up.
U spend minimum 6 hours lab work cause you love it
and if you can't wrap your head around even that
you are kidding yourself. My lady is a Chem Grad.
I don't even wanna tell you about other aspects of
your life that are going to have to change.

i like science physics biology ecology what ever. chem is a dip in an unfriendly pool of hell. i studied for hours and hours and never had a single clue what i was suppose to retain. the first day was crazy hard and it never got better just worse. i also had one of the worst teachers for it... but YIKES... this is not the nice part of science its numbers that go 10 places past the decimal point and a ton of shit i dont care about.

Can anyone who did learn all that shit tell me anything sweet about life that they would not have realized with out that part of chem? its just a window into the mind of god right?

Didn't mean to sound pretentious or anything, but U.S education system has deemed me bright. (And ya I realize that the system is F@#&ED) I'm a college freshman, so I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do and have had an interest in chemistry since I first took a class in high school. My focus in geology was going to be geochem, so the transition is not so unprecedented. I realize that chemistry is a difficult subject and just wanted to hear from people who have studied it what I should expect. I'm not trying to half ass my way into a degree. What other aspects of my life should I expect to change if you would be so kind?

Kind brother, thank you for your reply. I do not want to stomp on your toes ... as per my comment earlier .... it's not a personal jab. As a scholar I must tell you that any discipline on a grad level is no joke if you plan to excel. Long hours at the lab .... as also reading of the material (preparation) .... becomes your way of life for a period of time. Your circle of friends will change .... you will have little time to spare. Taking into consideration that you are already playing with chemicals (as you are a member of this board) ... you must realize that any recreational use of anything .... is going to impede on your education .... weed included. So if you are serious ... you are going to have to stop frying .... otherwise you are going to fail from the start.
You must realize that in order to understand chemistry ..... you have to commit to her 100 % ...... it is a marriage. You need to have the passion .... and hence drive .... to persevere. Interest in the subject alone .... is not enough.

I am not sure which year you are in .... but do consider sitting in on some of the chem courses ..... just to get the feel. Get to know some Chem heads on campus .... and navigate through their reading lists ... have a look at the work load ..... have them take you to some classes .... you can always sit in.

yup interest aint enough for chem be ready to marry it, or do one of the other chiller sciences. I can learn sci. easy, not chem
