Another CFL vs HPS facts and heat temps.

NO need for a glass shield on a cfl..

I have never seen a fluorescent burn a plant at a distant of 1 inch with just a gentle breeze from a fan..

and any time I have seen a BURN from a fluorescent, it is very isolated.. just a small spot on a plant.. but when you see a burn from an HID.. it is major...

of course HIDs are BETER (well HPS 400 and UP are better) but if you don;t want to deal with exhaust and heat... CFL is a great place to begin and get KILLER results...

Easy to wire for 110 plug its color coded...

Yes... you are correct...the reason is to explain the heat factor associated with CFLs....I have used these myself and had decent results....but wanted to point out that the energy and heat from these lights are not near as effective as hyped....and if not vented properly cabinet will reach unsafe levels for the plant....(heat stress)
Of course just my observations...and 2 sense worth...everyone needs to decide based on all the info they gather and what works for them.

probably true... cabnet grows will probably always have heat issues without solid ventilation regardless of bulb.. good point bro..

but if the ceiling is HIGH...6-7 feet.... and the plants are on the bottom of the closet.. it is really no problem.. the closet will only get a couplke degrees warmer than the ROOM...

when's the last time you've been kicked in da nutz?

I have a 3x3x5 space growing 10 plants, and right now all i have is a 150w daylight CFL from hydrofarm(actual 150w, not equiv.) Lookin to get more light for flowering ( which will hopefully be starting in 1-2 weeks). Should i go with the same light i have ( except with a 150w warm bulb), or go with the 70,100,or 150 watt HPS??

My babies seem to love the 150w CFL, i would love to just get anoter one, so i can stick with CFL, but everyone is tellin me to go HPS

ANY SUGGESTIONS???

Not everyone is trying to grow pounds. For those of us who are growing personal stash so as not to have to deal with criminals to get our green, CFLs are a viable option. If you're growing a cash crop, totally not worth it.

I will not turn my nose up at CFL grown bud. My first grow was CFL (and my 2nd might be as well, undecided) and the results got me plenty baked.

My 100w HPS with no glass shield runs about 270-300 degrees at the bulb

just to put my 2 cents in i want to include a different floro...

its the floros i use to grow.. well for my first 5 grows i used them.. i added a couple hps in with them (hps lamps are cheaper than these) for this grow...

they are sunleaves satellite IV floros.. 420w - 4 bulb ballasts that use tt-105 bulbs.. 44,000 lumens per ballast... 11,000 lumens per bulb.. hottest running temp is 95F... i am able to keep them with an inch or two of any plant without them burning at all.. including new sprouts...

they easily would blow a 400w hps out of the water.. and im fairly confident in saying that they would at least keep up with a 600w hps... if you dont believe me check the youtube video in my sig with my last grow.. they were about 5 weeks at the time of the video...

now i also think if they could make a 1000w ballast such as this it would easily beat out a 1000w hps bulb.. but i cant prove that and nor do i want to start that debate...

anyways ill post a couple pics of the plants i have going now and my grow room.. believe me when i say the floros work MUCH better than the HPS lamps i have.. but again, the hps was purchased because i didnt have a grand to buy 2 more of the floros.. i am also going to get 4 x 1000w floros for a flower room i am setting up.. but again, if i could afford to get the equivalent in the floros i would do that.. but 4000ws of these floros would cost me 4000 alone.. which is WAY more than the HPS.. if they ever come out with a 1000w version of my floros tho i will sell that hps and switch over...

the pics are random ones from last week.. i update pics in my journal on thursday if anyone wants to see how things are progressing...

i disagree entirely... if you have the same amount of wattage in several different lamps then you can achieve the same lumen rating while spreading out the plane of light that the plants see... it would create canopy of even wattage and sized nuggets... you actaully can keep them closer to the plants as well being less wattage and allow for more lumen uptake

Hi, I'm planning a grow in my attic and I am worried about the police helicopters using their heat sensors to see my grow.

Would a CFLs be better option than HPS?

I'm planning on using one or two 200W CFL's with a reflector.

Trying to bring back an old thread here, but if you're still around, pls take a look at

this example of a cfl setup in a ventilated enclosure, which I'm trying to make more efficient. I think I'm going for an hps for flower, because these cfl temps seem just as bad
