most white people's only experience with black culture is from movies, the TV and popular music.
the TV news provides example after example of criminality, films provide endless stereotypes (see Soul Plane or any tyler perry vehicle) and popular music reinforces all these (almost invariably negative) stereotypes in the most obvious and repugnant manner.
the black stars popular culture like Oprah (who is popular among women of every colour) and will smith try to soften the influences of the stereotype barrage, but even they often slip back into the well worn ruts of Black American Culture.
meanwhile the shucking and jiving minstrel show performers endlessly parade their stereotypes, using them to appeal to the lowest common denominator, driving home the common belief among members of the mainstream that black people simply must relish their role as ghetto fabulous hoodrat buffoons and criminal scum.
ok the last one is pretty lulzy.
but you get the point?
if the Black Community wants to be taken seriously and shed the stereotypes, they should perhaps take steps to marginalize these clowns, rather than continuing embrace them.
