I have a friend moving to seatle next weak, will definately have to make a trip out. Seamaiden, I'm pretty sure I've been to calaveras county. I had to take the long way around yosemite (pass into the park from the east was still closed) a few years ago and took the pass to the north of the park. I googled it and it looks like I rolled through. Freaken beautiful country. Unfortunately I live on the other side of the country and haven't been that way in five years. Hopefully we will get to visit this winter, my wife has family in Mountain View that we want to visit.

Mountain View?? You're KIDDING. That's where my youngest son's girlfriend lives, or pretty near there. I'm in Amador County, but last year we did a major run--hit as MANY Sierra passes in one day as possible. I'd only been riding a couple of months when we did it, and to call it exhausting is an understatement.

Starting nearby where we live off Hwy. 88, up over Carson Pass. Head east on 89, and then past Markleeville and on up over Monitor Pass (if you've never been on that one, take care, I got vertigo the first time coming from that direction).
Hooked up with 395 to go down the eastern scarp of the Sierra, and then on to Hwy 108, taking us up over Sonora Pass. SPECTACULAR, and on a carbureted bike, a bit sketchy as mine almost punked out on me on a couple of those turns.

Now, had we had the time, the inclination, and the energy, we could have added Ebbetts Pass on Hwy 4 to that mix, which is where Big Trees is.

I do miss living near enough to the ocean to smell it, but these mountains sure are purty, too. I think you tried to hit Tioga Pass, closed for winter and one of the higher passes over the Sierra if I recollect. I won't just ride through Yosemite, they ding each bike for $20. Fuck that, I'll ride around.

We were coming up from orange county and tried to take the eastern route through Bishop and then over Tioga pass in early June. We stopped at the Mono lake ranger station when we found out the pass was closed. A pretty ranger with an opel and diamond engagement ring suggested we stay the night in Lundy Canyon. She actually named her daughter after the place. (don't ask me why I remember all this, it was like 6 years ago, well she was really pretty). Anyhow absolutely surreal place you can hike/climb over the back of the canyon into the backside of Yosemite. Closest to Heaven I have ever been, there a some car camping sites, I would recommend packing in for the night. The 108 pass over the Seirra's was incredible, I remember guys snowboarding at the top of the pass. I would love to take my bike out there, 2005 VTX 1300. So many places to ride. Hiked Yosemite falls the next day and camped uptop, what a b*tch of a hike with a pack on. Next day ip to El Capitan and down through Sequoia and over to oakland for the night. Morning in San Fran and back to Orange county. We were young and in a big hurry to get no where. Didn't make it by ure way, maybe next time

How close are you to the ski resorts? Wish my pictures from that trip were digitals, guess I'll have to go back for more.

About an hour away from Kirkwood, upcountry. My husband happens to have a VTX as well. Sorry for the hijack, SubC! Quick! Someone put up some pretty pictures... (I'll start)

LOL, I fell bad about the hijack. I have pictures, but it's not letting me post. The VTX struggled?

Oh, no, he's got an 1800 (R), '03. Those are fuel injected. My Aero ('04; 750) definitely struggled, as did *I*. Now, we both have a much easier time of things. If you're familiar with the section of Hwy 49 that's between Mokelumne Hill and Jackson, it's a bit of a twisty, bottoming out at the Moke(lumne) River--used to take it at 25mph or below, now I end up doing 40+ without even realizing it. Except when I scrape my boards, that always surprises me.

First pic I crawled right up close to take. I'll be hunting one of these jokers this fall, kinda barbaric but how often do you get to hunt an alligator. Azelea hill is the second pic. If you can't tell I like to catch the wild life, third guy was a friendly little anole.
