amber percentages, is it an educated guess?

Good! It's totally worth shooting for perfect ripeness. Most people who rely on trichomes only are harvesting too early. Very few, if any, harvest too late.
True to an extent. You do need to keep an eye on the trichs because if you let them go too long they break off a lot easier. Same reason why you should wet trim, not dry trim. Sticky wet trichs hang onto the buds better when handled.

As far as the high, I agree, it's bro-science. The color of trichomes is no indication of the effect. That's all on the strain. You're not going to get a sativa to give you couch lock by letting all the trichs turn amber. All you're gonna get is less high because the trichome heads are all degraded and falling off their stems.

You'll never harvest at the right time if you do that. Trichomes are just a piece of the puzzle. People like to think they're being more scientific about harvesting when they say "cut at 30% amber" or something, but without the other harvest signs you'll just end up with premature bud. Harvesting by scoping for some % of amber is mostly bro science and nonsense that keeps being parroted by new growers that hear it someplace else. Read this: https://forum.grasscity.com/threads/a-guide-on-when-to-harvest.666373/. Once you break free of scopes and learn the true signs of ripeness, you'll never rely on a scope again for anything other than just one tool of many. Another thing that drives me nuts is people who think they can manipulate the high based on trichome color rather than type of strain.
Thanks for the link, it was a really good read!
