I have just been seeing now the DIY LED didn't even know that was a thing till recently. Is there any reason you like to DIY compared to buying a light? Cheaper/more power/ you know exactly what your lights are? Are there any drawbacks such as machine quality lights may offer more than is possible to achieve at home?

Basically, its the cheapest diodes available, wired to the most inefficient drivers available. In other words, its total crap, stay away. Listen to what HydroDan suggested above and build your own COB light, or purchase one, but stay away from this cheap piece of garbage. Single diode lights like this can't compete against super powerful COB's.

Cheap LED light = Disaster

Exactly my thoughts. There are some manufacturers with very decent led lights, but holy shit, their prices are crazy.
I'm waiting on some last parts I need to start building my own 20 cob Gavita 1000 "killer" (sounds cool eh?).
You replied in my thread about the 2015 stock led strips, from all the research I've done, these seem like a "deal of the year" from price perspective.
As far as my knowledge goes, their stats also look very promising, I'm just waiting on someone who can give the final word on that before I buy a big bunch of them.

OP I went round and round with Chinese LED, and was looking at that unit. Chinese LED is improving, but let's forget about initial or long term quality for a second and talk PAR.

Look at the last pic on the Amazon site, that's the published PAR reading per manufacturer. The 1' x 1' dead center spot (at 24") is the only acceptable area for serious bloom results. Everything else is okay for veg, but look how shitty that light does at 2' x 2' or larger. You'd need two of those for decent results. Two units = HPS equivalent heat generation.

Now look at what $400 buys you with a Timber kit or Northern Grow Lights. There are some nice grows here with a single Photon! And a Timber kit is killer if you can build a frame. Love mine!

They have been working GREAT from what I can tell and not too bad on price either. I just bought two more actually as they are only $90 a piece right now.

In a 5x5 tent with 6 girls, these are powerful indeed I have to keep them pretty far from my plants or they begin showing signs of photo burn. Im looks to spread more light around my ScrOGs edges which is why I'm getting more.



These have grown my babies 100% from seed they have known nothing else :)

well in theory there are good single diode lights but you wont find them for cheap on amazon. as badkarma mentioned this is the cheapest components you can find stuffed into a pretty box to separate you from your money

in general you get what you pay for, for DIY projects youll be about $1-$2 watt, and for good prebuilt cob and single diode fixtures $2-$3 a watt. but you still need to do your homework cause there is a lot of prebuilt junk out there in that pricerange as well. asking here is always wise
