Wasnt trying to spend a bunch of money for a roll of tubing that Id never use up, but I wanted to try a straw log for shits and giggles. Long story short, the wife is now pissed at me for using all the diaper genie rolls for my projects. Its tough enough for horizontal logs, cant really vouch for vertical jobs though. 5 bucks at Wally for like a 20 foot roll. (diaper genie 2 refill)

Why bother with logs? The only point is to get your straw as dense as possible but you can do that by chopping the straw to 1/2 inch or less and dumping it all in a bin. I think they use logs to get away from casing. Best just to case.

I agree a casing is better. IMO, in my particular set of circumstances, an outdoor hpoo casing is absolute best. But I was posting this simply as an alternative for those who do like to work with straw. I personally grow oysters as well as actives, and sometimes I do a straw grow simply because cleaning stem butts of poo and casing gets to be a PITA, especially on outdoor grown cubs after a heavy rainfall. I usually do work with straw blocks, for oysters, using my old SGFC as a mold, taking care of gas exchange while colonizing and consolidating. Those too go outdoors. The log was just for giggles, just because. :)
