Airstones!... where do they go?

ok so I got some airstones and a pump for my AeroGarden... where do they go, and sarcastic assholes, please refrain from saying "in the water". SPECIFICALLY where do they go? i have them under the root system so it almost bubbles the root system to the surface of the resoivoir, is this goood or badd?

I put mine right under the pots.I use the little suction cup things that came with my aqarium heater.I stick them to the tub floor and the stones slip right in the holder.As long as the roots are getting air,it does not matter where they are.OPH
