airstone noise?

Good day fellow bubbleheads ,First I wish to thank everyone who has posted information helping with various and sometimes repetitive questions especially having patience with us newbes:clap:

My question is I have just setup my first cabinet grow and I am more than pleased with the way it turned out,but when I transferred my bubbleponic tub into it and pluged in the air pump and stones it made my whole cabinet hum with noise :neutral:
has anyone had this problem and if anyone has any advice would be appreciated:D

ya ... its called vibration bro!

there is nothing to worry about ... as long as the pump is pumpin air to the stone and the stoneis producing air .. then ur golden!

Thanks but does anyone know how to eliminate the noise I am growing inside and would like it to be quieter

I have my air pump sitting on a cushion, this has helped dramatically. If you've got the time n money you could sound proof your cabinet with acoustic foam (pretty cheap off ebay). Search in the grow room design forum mate, that's a whole massive thread there dedicated to sound insulation

Most of it is coming from the pump. Put it on something that dampens the vibrations, like a piece of thick rubber from a mat or something. You can also put something like that under the tote.

I hung my air pump from a string to a hook in the ceiling to reduce the vibration. I can still hear it but you cannot feel any vibrations at all.

Now get a bungee cord and add it to the string, it will dampen the vibrations further.

if you cant deal with airstone noise stop growing with airstones. i cant believe a airstone noise would make someone post a thread.

Did you ever sort the problem out with the stone vibrating, i am having that problem now. The pump is hanging from a spring so that is sorted, it seems to be the bubbles from the stone knocking on the bottom of the tote. Thinking about hanging the stone from the lid with fishing wire.

That is the problem growing in the loft, vibrations go straight through the house.

I finally hung the pump inside a cooler on bungee cords and had to put airbubble packaging under totes and pump cooler ,seams to have quieted it down about 85 to 90 %.
putting airbubble packaging under the totes helped a lot good luck:lol:

I think its a great question to ask about myself. Air pumps are always noisy, but not using one would mean switching to a different grow method. Wouldnt it make more sense to find a quieter airpump, or find a way of reducing the noise of the pump?

Would really like to hear peoples experiences of the quietest airpump, or some way of housing the pump in something like an expanded polystyrene box, so that the stupid thing isnt so noisy.

Using a smaller less powerful pump is not really an option, since it would compromise growth...

So, who makes the quietest air pumps then. They all claim to be super silent or noiseless or whatever. They lie.

All you have to do is buy some super glue gel. Super glue the air stone to the bottom of your bucket and It wont rattle around. The gel kind is water safe, many people have been using it in their reef tanks to glue frags for years with no bad effects.

further more the hooks attached to the bungee cord are metal, if you wrap them with cloth, rubber ect it further helps achieve what your trying to do in regards to noise reduction.

and agreed on the use of something below the tote or bucket to absorb some of the vibrations associated with the use of an air pump.

and of course if your already concerned to this point about noise reduction then i would investigate ways to sound proof your grow space...

yeah its more time, money and effort but clearly you are worried about detection and in my book there is no length to which you shouldn't go to make yourself comfortable with your grow.

I do this and it works great
It is just common sense, something vibrating on the ground is going to be louder than something vibrating in mid air
It dramatically reduces the noise doing this

For the bubble stone I used a trick Roseman mentioned. I tied a fishing weight to either end of the bubble stone it don't move anymore !! And for that noisy air pump ,is it the little sunleaves you got with the hydro kit (thats where mine came from) it is noisy damn near kept me from sleeping and it was down the hall in a closet !! I just went to wallmart and got an Aqua culture it has two outlets and its quite as hell and only cost 12 bucks.. Hope that helps a bit good luck with your groew

Or you could just soak your airstones in water before putting them in the rez and they will stay on the bottom
I would rather not put metal in my rez
